do you think releasing a demo would reduce pirating?

This question stems from the post of "would you pirate HL2 if you had the chance"? Given that many, MANY people would be tempted, do you think that putting a demo out would reduce the number of pirated versions?

Also, do you think Gabe should go ahead and let PC gaming mags have a playable demo soon, to quench our thirst for a LEGAL playable version?

There is already a demo... oh wait. Does the leak count?

Nah, I don't think gaming mags should get a playable demo and if a demo was released it won't reduce the amount of pirated versions, likely to increase IMHO.

No Demo until after HL2 has been released. A Demo might have stopped people from downloading the "Beta" 6 months ago, but the main damage is done. Who ever was going to dl the "Beta" already has, and the peeps that have waited this long will probably never follow through.

Sweet, a demo thread. Awesome.

I don't want a demo to give away the gameplay before I have the full game to conquer.

it would be cool if they just bloody release a demo that ONLy has that physics room from the e3 demo 2003 ... thats all i ask i m buying the bloody give me something GIVE ME SOMETHING>>> AHHHHHHHHH DAMN IT > its summer and nothing but beer sex and beer, i want to ADD hALf LIFE 2 to that list.. AHHHHHH

The physics room is half the game.

What's beer sex? Sounds kinky. :naughty:

I also want the physics room...and why is it half the game? It's only a room where you can have fun :D

I hope that when Valve releases the demo, it will be just like Half-Life: Uplink - maps that aren't in the full game, something that happens somewhere alongside the main storyline.
I remember that after playing Uplink I wanted the game almost as much as I want HL2 now ;)

BTW - when was Uplink released anyway? How long was it after the release of Half-Life?

Yes, simply because a number of people will download the full version, see how they like it, and then base thier decision whether to buy off of that. However, a high quality dempo (like the HL1 demo) will render that unneccessary

having fun is half the game.

Same for me!

Valve don't do pre-release demo's so this thread is pointless, especially when you reckon the only other option is to take illegal action and download a pirated version. I just want Valve to get the game done.

Moron's starting these threads about pirating get on my tits.

I think a demo before release would encourage piracy. A demo of HL2 would only serve to hype up the game even more than it is now. And since most people are incredible impatient, they would do anything to get their hands on a copy of HL2 including pirating it.

i don't think a playable demo will reduce pirating.. simply put, if someone is going to pirate a game, they will do it regardless of demo..

now if one is "un-sure" about purchasing a copy of HL2 because that person doesn't think the game will be good...well.. then they can wait til there a playable demo (after the game is released.. i think thats what Valve have said).. plus if they are "un-sure" about a game.. theres no hurry to get it :)

as for PC gaming mags having playable demos? perhaps after the game is released.. but not before that :dork:

I am not really sure. I think it might for some people. But if your willing to pirate at all you would prabably just get the full game if you had a way to do it.

I agree with blahblahblah, a demo would simply encourage piracy. The increase in sales as a result of releasing a demo would be far outweighed by the increase in piracy as a result of releasing a demo IMO.

Yeah, people would get teh demo, like it so much that they pirate it instead of buy it. So I think it would have during the leak days, but not if the whole finished game was leaked.

Pre-game demos are a great investment. I got the UT2k4 demo and loved it. I bought the game and loved it too.

Valve screwed up too much to have time for a pre-release demo. I doubt they will even do a post-release. They'll finish raising this bastard child and then go on vacation like they said they would.

people dload warez (some of them anyway) to try the game.. i have never dloaded warez of a game that has a demo

Same here. If the developers refuse to release a demo, I will always warez it to see if I like it. If I like, I buy - simple as that. If I don't like it, well I'm not playing it am I? You get to test drive a car before you buy it, the same should be true of games.

I have no patience for developers that don't release demos.

also.. if u want to try out a demo.. then u should also be able to wait for the game to be released before u get a demo.. for the sake of the fans that would be waiting for a release and don't need a demo to decide/spoil the game for them.

its fair me thinks.
