Do you think this would work?

Well, I was just thinking about a mod idea.

If anyone's ever read the book Ender's Game, I was thinking of a mod that would be like the battle room games that Ender Plays. For those of you who have never read the book, the battle room games are basically this huge room that has zero gravity. There are two teams that start on either side of the huge zero gravity room.

on either side of the room, there are two doors, and on the sides of the doors, there are five levers. (but since online games sometimes will not have five people per team, let's make that two levers) The object of the game is to get to the other side of the room and have two people simoultaneously pull both levers. The secondary object of the game is to "freeze" (kill) all of the players on the other team.

each teammate begins with a laser pistol. The main fire mode of the laser pistol fires a red laser at the target. When the target person is hit with a laser, the limb that is hit gets frozen. If the head or chest get hit, the entire player gets frozen. The secondary fire of the pistol is a simple flashlight. (as some battle rooms may be totally dark)

now, here's the tricky part. To move in the zero gravity room, you would need to jump from wall to wall. Because there is nothing to hold onto, each jump will lead you in one direction, and keep you going until you hit something else. In order to reach the other side of the room, players will have to make an elaborate string of jumps from one wall to the other.

To help out with jumping, and to provide cover, there are several "stars" placed all over the room. Each of these "stars" is a cube that simply floats in the zero grav room. Each of the "stars" will have a bit of gravity, so when you jump onto them, you can easily walk and make another jump.

Of course, if a person gets stuck in the middle of nowhere in the room, they will be totally helpless, and will have to rely on another player to push them towards an obstacle.

just an idea I've been thinking about. so, with Half-life's advanced physics, do you think it is possible to make a mod like this?

i actually like that. it would certainly be possible, and quite fun to play though it could get old fairly quickly. if you could modify it a bit, just for funs sake, i think it could be very good.

Wow that would be an awesome idea. But its sounds more like a thirdperson shooter sorta game rather than an fps.

Of course, I intended for modifying it like adding classes (machine gunner, sniper, etc.) and maybe adding grenades. Also, maybe being able to enter the stars. I never intend to make this, though.

That would definitely be cool to replay parts from Ender's Game. Would be cooler if you could make it so the player freely revolves around the room, like jump towards a wall and it turns into the floor for you so you could aim a lot better when trying to jump towards the other wall.

Can't wait for Ender's Game the movie to come out, yep thats right.
Ender's Game

well, I didnt say I HAD to add classes and grenades. anyway, heres a crappy 5min picture of the thing, if you have no clue what i'm talking about.

they're making an enders game movie!?!? awesome!

anyway, the whole point of the game (in the book anyway) is to make you re-think your strategy. Because in zero-grav, there is no ground, so any way can be "up" or "down" and it can be very confusing if you don't know what you're doing.

That would get boring so quickly. One weapon. One room (map). The only thing different would be the placement of the stars... and no grenades or snipers...

I was thinking the same.

I think if done right, It could be awsome!

make the cubes giant asteroids that after certain amount of damage get split into smaller parts that float off in all directions.. and when smaller parts hit each other they connect together so they are able to become a big asteroid again..
I dunno. yeah and one weapon might be boring..
The only thing i can think of to make the actual level less boring is to make the walls some sort of envirement, for example you could have like plants growing off the insides of the walls..

well, the only other weapon I could add and still be canon would be the "hook" which is a device that works almost exactly like the +hook weapon in TFC and sven co-op.

the weapon fires out an energy beam that can be used to pull oneself around the room without having to jump. (of course, this gives the player with the hook a MAJOR advantage) Also, if the person with the hook were standing on a wall or a star, they could pull another player towards them, or perhaps even smash them against walls, or use them as giant maces. (although this is not the way it was done in the book)

to make things more interesting...yeah, I know the thing sounds boring. (so adding things might be an option if the mod is boring) However, the revolutionary thing about this is the zero-gravity fighting, not only is it zero-grav, but it's totally free motion. What I mean by that is that you can turn the camera in any direction, flip the player over, etc. In the original half-life, and probably half-life 2, the camera was stuck on one plane, and you couldn't flip it totally upside down. For this mod to work, you would most defiantley need to be able to flip the charachter upside down, sideways, or whatever to get an actual feel for zero gravity.

also, players limbs getting "frozen" (in hl2 sense, ragdolled). Whenever a limb gets frozen, the player cannot get damaged again on that limb. So, if you froze your own legs, for instance, you could shoot off at the enemy with your legs first, and use them as a sheild, while still firing at them with your arms. (yes, I understand that this would work best in third person)

if you have the opportunity to make something better, I think you should in this case. Why limit yourself to copyrighted material, you should instead use it to create something original and better.

On the contrary, Bean comes up with the hook using metal cable, not an energy beam, if I recall.

.

ah, now going back, I think you're right!
