Do you think war is protrayed to lightly?

Well, not just war but violence in general?

This was sparked off by the comments in a now deleted thread.

Ive noticed that on the news, the horrors of war really arent portrayed that was unless its part of thier plan. Personally i think its quite sad how images of people diying and suffering are used in someones scheme to get ratings. Not only is it highly unethical, but the way they are sometimes shown is quite out of sync with reality. For example, i was watching the news a while ago, and it showed a tank shooting at a radio tower or something. Anyway, the camera was mounted on the turret jsut abouve the barrel and it really did look like a computer game, at one point it even went into "third person" with a view from just behind the tank.

I dont have a problem with violence in video games, but when it gets transfered the other way - video game styles used to portray real life events, i feel quite sad.

Anyway, just curious as to what other peoples thoughts are on this.

It generally doesn't scathe me. Only when used to the extent of GTA when you kill people and laugh doesn't make me happy. I really have no problem with violence. Oh and violence isn't portrayed lightly at all *cough...Soldier of Fortune...cough*

Me too, I LOVE violence only in games but not in real life. Except if the other person want to harm ya you need to defend yourself with all possible ways you got.

Hmm..so that's where that thread went. I posted on it yesterday and I couldn't find it today.

I think violence is just so common these days that we've grown too used to it. Every day on the news there's more news of a violent crime...someone being stabbed...murdered..or another suicide bombing somewhere in the Middle East...it's rediculus. Now with fighting in Iraq with our soldiers. On top of all the stuff I just said, there's news of our helicopters being shot down, so many soldiers being killed...all this thrown at us daily.

I think that that tank footage you were talking about was more for the public's entertainment and insight. Most people do not know exactly how things work in war. The media was probably just showing the operations of a tank and how it works. I don't think it was meant to look like a video game. From the sounds of it...I think it may have been just sort of a tiny demonstration of some of the things that happen...

Violence in games is ok as long as the kid knows it's a game. My parents didn't really send me that message...but I figured it out on my own like many of you. With kids growing up with more realistic games thant Tetris and Super Mario Bros. they have to know that the behavior they see on TV and video games shouldn't carry over to real life. Most kids do...but some are missing that lesson.

yes i think it is. i go online and i shoot someone through the eye in Red Orchestra and i jump up and down inside because i've just fragged someone. although, i don't think i'd be jumping up and down inside if that were a real gun and a real person and a real bullet through their brain.

one thing i've noticed, is that the news is far more shocking than games and films, but they're always trying to ban games and stuff because it's shocking. well..umm...real life is even worse, try banning that numbskull.

anyway, kids are desensitized to violence nowadays. how are kids going to feel when all they see on the news is how their leaders and going over and kicking the shit out of other people. but they aren't shown the horrors of war, they just see the happy troops etc. so in other words, propoganda.

i don't know where i'm going with this, but all i'll say is that you humans have a lot to learn.

Well you will hear about it more than you will usually see it. I think the news media is obligated to inform us as acurately as possible as to whats going on with out crossing some ethical lines. Is it portrayed to lightly? I can't really answer that seeing as how i've never been in a war situation or seen first hand what really happens. My best guess would be that, yes, it is portrayed "lightly" to an extent. It seems nothing is on a personal level when you watch or listen to a news story. You were told that so and so was shot and killed, but very rarely do they ever go into detail about the person. His family, and friends. Or what he was really like.

well saddam needed to be shown hes not immortal and he cant just do what he wants and i feel it has helped Iraq.
I have no complaints with violance in video games if its an 18 then kids cant buy it if there parents want them to play these games then its up to them.
I dont feel its wrong to show suffering and people dying because of war on tv (news) we all have a right to know exactly whats going on and it lets people see that war isnt all glory and a cool adventure its a nasty place to be.

The violence we see on TV and in games is almost completely unreal to us. When I see a murder happen in a movie or when I kill virtual citizens of a virtual city I really don't see the violence as what it would be in real life. It is completely different because I have no connection with these people.

Its the same when watching the news, I hear about a brutal murder and I just accept it and it doesn't really bother me.

But when REAL violence happens right in front of you, or when someone is killed that you actually had some sort of connection with everything is different. Here is an example: I watch the news all the time and hear about car crashes where people are killed or injured and I hardly take any notice of it (you could say I have been desesitized) but then just last week someone I knew was killed in a car crash on the way to school. I didn't know them well enough to really feel sad and depressed but it was still a completely different feeling and a much longer lasting one than what I get from watching death on TV.

What im trying to say is that we have only been desensitized to death when it has no emotional effect on us (car accidents on TV, killing virtual people, etc). However we will still be just as emotionally distraught as we have always been when it happens in reality and in a way that will effect us.
