For games, i like to have an "intimate experience" so i always use my headphones. I don't really like using speakers because:
A. I like my stuff loud and it bothers everyone else in my house if i have them loud
B. Too much of a hassle to set up
C. And much more expensive than headphones
But, i do often use my speakers when watching DVDs.

Headphones all the way. If I'm on the computer, I'm in teamspeak, and speakers do NOT work with teamspeak.

Also, speakers annoy the piss out of my girlfriend, so I tend to like the headphones anyways.

5.1 surround sound headphone.

the accoustics of this room suck, sound travels downstairs way too easy from the position of the computer, so its good not to bother other people. Also the 5.1 is lush.

Only problem is my ears get a little hot and sore after 16 hour stints :)

I use both, depending what time it is and what i'm doing.
If i'm on teamspeak or a match or its late then it's headset
If not then its usually speakers :)

Speakers for music (I dont have a radio/boombox/whatever) headphones for everything else.

Hm what 5.1 headphones?

I had Zalman 5.1 headphones for like 2 years, but they broke and I got some Sennheiser stereo headphones now. Are there new 5.1 headphones with better surround these days?

Headphones 99% of the time, mine recently broke and gaming was rather unpleseant with my crap speakers. <3 headphones

Speakers during the day, headphones at night.

mostly headphones but when I've got friends over I setup my speakers, so I voted both.

I'm in the basement so I use speakers the most. My brother does too. So we have our different music going.
Only time I use headphones would be if I need to use a voice chat program (teamspeak) or I am around other people who don't want to hear my PC (at a LAN or others are over).

Headphones, much more immersiveness in video games imo.

Plus, I live in a house where everyone bitches and moans about everything being too loud, so yeah.

Good heavens! I didn't realize so many people used headphones. What's this rot about more immersive sound? There's two speakers v. at least four, six+ in a decent home setup. When somebody creeps up at 5 o'clock, the sound comes from that direction. The sub speaks for itself for immersive sound. It appears that the reason for using headphones isn't necessarily better sound, it's the fact that their home speakers are no ball of fire, they've got roommates/siblings/parents living with them, they can't play without teamspeak, etc. I think headphones are a good second choice if you can't set the living room up the way you want with 5.1 or higher speakers, but I can't believe everyone thinks the sound is superior on headphones. For the record, I don't use teamspeak and am primarily interested in immersion in single-player campaigns. Here's my setup (5.1):
X-Mystique sound card -> fiber optic cable -> Yamaha HTR-5730 Receiver
Center: KLH Audio Systems (CTR200)
Fronts: Altec Lansing (H-811B horns w/ 806A drivers and 12" subs)
Surround: Pioneer (2-10" subs, 2-4" mids, 1 tweeter)
Sub: Sony (SA-WM 250)

The fronts came out of a theater in San Francisco that closed after a fire.

I use SPEAKERS.

I see headphones chilling next to the keyboard!
:flame:

For the record, speakers 100% of the time. I am in my upstairs where the sound travels throughout my whole house. No one in my family really cares how loud I play it as long as my door is closed.

What is a good pair of headphones to get? I usually dont use them because I like ot hear a little bass....which ones have bass?

no matter how good or comfortable the headphone is, it will damage your ear if you use it a lot. you wont sense the damage caused right away but when you get older you will experience significant hearing loss.

You get much more immerse in what you're doing with a pair of good speakers, may it be music or games. When a granade goes off right beside you, with good speakers, you'll know you're in deep shit.

While writing this post, my mouse pointer has worked its way from the middle of the screen to the left side of the screen... you cant do that headphones :)

Glad someone made a thread like this, most of you seem to use headphones instead of speakers and I was going to buy a new speaker system but I think I'll spend my money on better surround headphones instead.

What do you have to pay for those these days?

Speakers plz. I prefer it when the sound fills my room and my head starts to explode.

w/e, usually speakers cause the headphones squeeze the hell out of my ears after a while.

Headphones & speakers at the same time! Gets a pretty cool effect going...
If I had the money though I'd obviously go with a really nice speaker setup...but I don't.

Headphones. The ones I have have insane bass so I love wearing them. Speakers if no on else is home... these two small Bose speakers put out a ton of sound.

I have never used headphones on the computer before I have some decent Logitech speakers with a good subwolfer so I see no need to make a game and or anything sound worse by "Muffling the sound" almost. That is my take on this.

i use my nice sennheiser headphones in preference of my 5.1 logitech setup for my pc when gaming, the sound quality just seems better and not as 'open' .. so i sort of have a better understanding of where sound is coming from (like footsteps in cs) than with a multi-speaker setup.

if i'm listening to music on my pc, it usually means i'm coding or something and i don't want outside distractions, so i'll use my headphones.
