It seems to me, every time someone of any influence, or of any interest stands up and criticizes the president and the administration about the war in Iraq, the only response they (administration) can muster is:
"We think its vital to stay the course and finish the mission"
Ok, thats all fine and good, but that does absolutely nothing to counter the critics, or answer the questions. So in my eyes, its almost as if they either:
A. Can't refute the facts against them, but refuse to admit a mistake
or...
B. Know they are mistaken, and are just grabbing at straws in an attempt to deflect opposition.
In fact, in the news today, a prominent Republican has stood up and likend the war effort and on going occupation in Iraq to Vietnam. And the response from white house officials? You guessed it, they invoke September 11th (which has absolutely nothing to do with Iraq, and I find absurd and disgusting to be allowed to be used as a justification for a political stance), and they hammer home how we must "stay the course".
Should we pull out, come home and pretend as though no mistakes were made? No, thats not what I'm proposing at all. I think and obvious course of action should infact be:
1.) begin pullout, lower troop numbers/levels and overall American military presence in Iraq. Time and time again this administration is teling us that we are still over there because they need our security. Thats bullshit to an extent for the simple fact that there wouldn't be sparse terroristic attacks on American soldiers if there were no American soldiers there to attack. With a lowerd U.S. occupation presence, the people of Iraq will start to feel at ease with the situation, and will come to the conclusion that we don't want to stay, we have no intentions of indefinate occupation, and that we don't intend to steal their land, their oil, or any of their resources.
2.) Rebuilding efforts should be handed to Iraqi born companies and outfits, and American interests should back off to an extent. The way it is now, the Iraq ecomony (much like our own, but thats a whole different topic) is in ruins. Giving them control of the rebuilding effort would spark immediate economic gains for the people, many jobs will be created, money will begin to flow, manufactured goods and services will pick up, and the people there will have something to do, something to look forward to, and work to be proud of. Thus releasing a lot of stress they may have over current situations. Because face it, if you are unemployed, extremist ideas are a little easier to grasp if you have nothing left to look forward to in life.
This is just a start, where we could take it from here really depends on what transpires, but in my eyes, the stubborn officials controlling the situation refuse to admit mistake in ANYTHING they say or do. Either that, or they just don't care. But one thing they've said is true, the outcome of this whole situation is going to be the burden of our children and our childrens children, and the way things are now... I'm not so sure I want to put my kids through this....
