For example, if I pointed my flashlight a crate (like in the SS attached) in the tunnels (where it is dark) but positioned it so that half shone on the crate and half on the ground, does it cast a shadow like the one I have drawn in myself (circled in red)?

no. all the shadows in cs:s are fixed. in the beta i dont know how it will change in the full version but in the bets your shadow always goes as if theres a light source over your left shoulder and slightly behind you. and when you're dead the shadows are below you. and a little to the left.

i dunno. maybe the sun is set to be the only light source in de_dust and thats why it seems like the shadows always go the same way. but no the crates dont cast shadows when you shine a light on em.

I doubt it. Half-Life 2/Source doesn't have fully dynamic lighting like DooM 3 has. It still operates off of light maps as far as I'm aware. Someone may be better qualified to answer though.

One question... how could it not cast a shadow?

Might sound stupid, but unless the light goes through the box, then it's casting a shadow, right?

It's not like the area behind the box is going to get DARKER or anything because you have a light by it? So are you saying that light passes right through the box? Because if it doesn't then the box is casting a shadow ^^

It just isnt that kind of system, its the same as the flashlight in DXIW, it is applied to the image after its rendered so no real lighting infomation is added, just brightened, but its tuned nicely with a texture shape which morphs to the surface (or somthing like that anyway), and it does look nice ingame :D

Source is capable of dynamic lighting and dynamic shadows. It's just that HL2/CS: Source do not make use of them. This is probably due to Valve wanting to appeal to a larger range of customers.

Given time and the fact the game can be updated via Steam, I'm sure it'll be enabled in the future.
