Great film, just 2 things:
1: I didn't get the bit where he says "one day, things will be better for you" to the chinese one and then she runs away.
2: I thought the axe would play a larger roll.

Cherita is supposed to represent innocent victims of the whole event. She basically gives Donnie the motivation to save the world.

I always thought they should have made more of where Donnie got the strength to use the axe so precisely and with such power.

I grasp it basically, but not all that well.
Awesome film though, the directors cut helps make it alot more sense as well.

Her life will be better after he...you know. At the end.

How would -----SPOILER----------Him Dying Make her life better?

He saves everyone from dying.
He saves his girlfriend from dying by not meeting her at all.

He also saves Frank.

He also saves the world from ending. :dozey:

The world was never going to end. Frank told him that so that Donnie's life would be taken instead of real Frank's and Gretchen's.

*Edit* It's also ironic, because Donnie never travelled forward in time, but backwards, and the whole time he was fixated on taveling into the future.

How is Cherita a victim?

But he had limited sight into the future, in the shape of those blobs that come out from people's stomachs

Spheres.

Spheres? they weren't spherical.

And BTW it's not just about time travel but the universe unraveling (which Donnie ties up by dying)

That's what they were called. Donnie said that that's what Roberta Sparrow referred to them as in her book.

*Spoilers*

The world was going to end. The whole movie takes place in the "tangent" universe. Frank is contacted to be the Manipulated Dead so that he can tell Donnie what will happen since Donnie is the Living Receiver. Donnie never had to necessarily die. He did that so Gretchen would live since if he had never met her, she would never end up dying.

Time travel does not take place during the entire movie, forwards nor backwards.

I don't follow.

If they're living in the tangent universe, that's suggesting that there's another universe that's exactly the same, and so on. So, if Donnie knew this, then how come he let himself die to save Gretchen even though she already died in the tangent universe.

Did that come in clear?

Also, why does Donnie laugh before he dies? I thought it was because of the irony that he travelled backwads and not forward.

The tangent universe was created when the jet engine fell through Donnie's house. Two universes are existing at the same time which isn't allowed. The things that happened in the tangent universe would've happened again if Donnie lived. Once he gives the jet engine (Artifact) reason for being, the tangent universe closes and stops existing.

Why is he laughing? No idea. If you listen closely, you can hear a car beeping its horn in the background. That's Frank trying to warn Donnie.

No, the tangent universe is created when Frank calls him out of the house.

Ohhh, ok, I thought these universes were existing at the same time, but featuring different points in time. Gotcha

Perhaps he's laughing at Frank's warning?

No. It was created long before that.

That's what I always thought. Donnie knew something better awaited him after death and he found Frank's warning funny. Yeah, that works.

Well, the director said he'd leave the viewers to do the interpreting.

For all we know, Donnie's laughing because he think he cheated death.

Speaking of Richard Kelly, his recent film, "Southland Tales" hasn't been getting good reviews :(

The director's commentary on the DVD also gives crucial details, such as the point of departure between the real world and the alternate universe — not when the engine crashes through the ceiling, but instead a few minutes before, when Donnie is called out to meet Frank for the first time.

DeusEx has the story most inline with how interpret it. I don't really care what Richard Kelly says about it. He should never have revealed what it was about, like Kubrick with 2001.

And OMG, this cat blinks! :O In two years I have never noticed that. :cat:

OHH. Wait. Yeah, you were right with that. I completely mixed up those scenes. I thought he talked to Frank after it crashed. My B.

You learn so much watching this movie for a second time

I think he was just laughing because he finally cracked and went bat f*ck insane.

"Went bat feck insane?"

Is that even English?

Technically, was it generated in the future, but ultimately was felt in the past.

If anyone can quote what Kane says, it would be most appropriate for this discussion

"He who controls the past commands the future. He who commands the future conquers the past."
It's my current MSN personal sentence thing.

Basically at the instant that the airplane engine fell through the roof there were two separate universes created to deal with something impossible happening. In the one regular timeline the only wierd thing to happen is that an airplane falls out of the sky and crushes Donnie in his bed. Everyone else goes on living. In the other timeline (the movie we see) all sorts of crazy magical shit happens. This ultimately is what leads up to a reason for the airplane engine to exist. But for that to happen Donnie has to sacrifice everything that happened in that alternate wierd timeline (including his hot girlfriend) and die in the other timeline. The director's cut explains it a lot better.

If everything Donnie does is supposed to lead to him being crushed what does trashing the school do? in the long run? Getting the English teacher fired? Which lead to cellar door? And him burning down the house leads to his mother being on the plane but why does his mother being on the plane cause the engine to fall off?

If he hadn't flooded the school, he would've never walked Gretchen home.
If Gretchen hadn't died in the tangent universe, Donnie probably wouldn't have cared if the universe would collapse or not. Same goes for him mom and sister when they're on the plane.

Oh, I get it now, since his mother was gone he was alone.
