Okay, ordered my brand new PC, all ready to play D3, but the game keeps freezing!. My specs meet the min sys requirements. When it freezes, an error message will pop up saying "VPU has stopped responding to processing demands" or something like that.

AMD Athlon 2800
512 Mbs RAm
ATI Radeon 9600 Pro 128

Any suggestions?.

Tried getting the game in lower res and specs?

Well, it used to just freeze. Now that I installed the drivers off of the CD, it will freeze momentarily and the screen becomes a variety of colors. Maybe my video card is damaged?, wouldn't seem out of the ordinary, seeing as how when I just got my comp I had to re-connect the CD-ROM drive myself :frown:

i have the same vid card as you and mine freezes too. too bad for us. I didnt really like the game anyway.

I have almost identical specs (except I have an Athlon 2600), and it has never crashed for me. I'm not sure why it crashes for you. perhaps you put the graphical settings too high? Might want to check the connections from your M/B to your video card as well.

This problem is with most 9600 cards.

The solution is simple, just:

right click > properties > settings tab > advanced > SMARTGART tab > and where you see "Fast Write", turn it "OFF"

:) My bro had the same problem with his 9600XT, it's fixed now.

the thing is, it should be off anyway, it isnt automatically turned on, someone must of turned SmartGart on. lol

heres another question, i got the 9600XT 256 meg, if I stick it on overdrive..? will anything good/bad come of it

Fast Writes and SmartGART are turned on by default if you follow the proper installation procedures.

Dunno about overdrive as my 9600XT doesn't have it (AIW model - comes clocked at 527/324 by default) but I've heard the Doom 3 doesn't play nicely with overclocked cards.

Heh, hell keeps freezing.

Yes you are right, Doom3 does not run perfectly on overclocked cards especially ATI.

i had the same problem as you, i have the same card, i tried everything but when i went into the control panel and rolled back my drivers and then clicked install new drivers through the control panel everything worked ok, pm me if you need a better explanation

doom3 is pants when it comes to performance

edit: oops, crap... Im in the Doom3 section!!!!
im gunna get mauled by fanboys! please dont eat me!
*hides signiture*
i dont hate doom3... i just despise it

I had a rad 9600XT 256mb, It crashed in all games. like every 5 minutes. I bought a rad 9800pro 128mb. It's fixed. And it runs like 1.5x faster :)

I don't understand why the ATI drivers try to enable fast writes. I have hell with my card if I don't turn it off and several people I know have the same problem.

BTW I have a 9500 Pro 128mb. It was on a MSI KT3 board but it now on a MSI kt600 board. Everything is fine with fast writes off...

My game locks up, too.

I have a Radeon 9600, 128 meg card, and it's in a HP laptop. My properties doesn't have SMARTGART, so what can I do to fix this.

Specs
3 gig processor
1 gig of ram

Also, it doesn't give me an error message, it just freezes.

You kinda need some D-R-I-V-E-R-S.

I have the latest drivers. At least the latest drivers I can use. The most up to date driver specifically says "not for notebooks."

Any other suggestions?

Notebook manufacturers provide their own drivers for the graphics card. Unfortunately they don't often bother to update them after the first few releases. You probably want to get the latest Omega drivers from http://www.omegadrivers.net/

Reinstall the ones you have if you insist on not getting new ones.

I've done something wrong with my frivers before and you end up with some of the control panel missing. It almost seems random but I haven't dont it since about 4.6/4.7.

I emailed activision about my problem, and they sent me a 3 paragraph email of excuses telling me why it's so hard to make games compatible with laptops. I can't say it helped.
