i have not played doom 1 or 2, i heard that doom3 is a remake of doom1, so if i buy t i wont be lost right?

well, considering doom1 was a hey there are aliens here shoot them game, and doom3 which is its remake has a sotry written by a proffesional and the game is supposedly focused around a more in depth story while preserving the blast everything in sight while adding a little strategy, so you will miss out, since doom3 is looking nice and will be much better than doom1

edit:/ while i like my post i misunderstood the original poster so you can disregard it (i jsut like it too much to delete it)

Don,t worry you won't be lost.
Doom 1 and 2 didn't really have a story, you just had to run a shoot.

Doom 3 will have a story and will not be a run and shoot game so even if you didn't play the first one and the second, the only thing you'll miss is the nostalgia of the old monsters coming back in DOOM 3.

you should be fine, just wear the brown undies when playing it :p

the story in doom 1 and 2 was jsut a paragraphe at the end of each 8 or 10 levels

Dang, the d00m 3 story will be distracting to the shooting lolz

OoGoff, if you say 'lolz' one more time I'm going to lose it... more than I already have.

lolz my freind! :E

So what is the premise of the story in D3?
I heard that you were a marine on mars. SHOOT EVERYTHING THAT MOVES!!!!
Doesn't sound like much of a story to me. That's why HL 2 is going to be so much better.

They actually hired a professional to write the story this time. But we don't know what it will be at this time.

If memory serves,
It's about a super weapon in some ancient ruins on Mars and you have to use it to defeat demons from hell that come every [forgot number] years. There's also going to be one major plot twist in the game. The story will be told through e-mail like messages that you get throughout the game.

Hmm, still skeptical

Most likely, most of the fans and people that play it will either

a) not care about the story
b) not pay attention to the story
c) not notice the story
d) or forget the story after 2 weeks or so

sorry for being such a doom hater

/me blurts out 'lolz' in front of Letters and farts in his general direction. :bounce:

Well what about Unreal 1 you got messages from dead people an nali books and its story as pretty good.

Lol, yeah. Sounds pretty bad, but most horror stories have a crappy premise. The plot twist will probably be a guy giving you directions turning out to be a demon the whole time. Which is cool, but it won't be jarring like it was in
System Shock 2
I hope the twist is something I couldn't think of instead of just a betrayal, but it will be hard when the nature and motives of your enemies are so clearly defined. But then again, that's the beauty of it! I'll never see it coming! Hoping there will be some interaction with that ancient race, though.

i think the focus in doom3 is more on fear than anything else...in quite a few interviews i've read, they say that they wanted to spend a lot of time making it an unpleasant yet enjoyable experience if that makes sense

story is a bit of a factor aswell but i think its mostly about the fear

Doom 3, from what I've heard about it, is like a hybrid of elements from Half-Life 1&2.

The basic premise and many of the features recall HL1, plus stuff like interactive physics, the graphics and so on reflect HL2.

For that reason, it should be extremely fun. I just can't get over how lame some of the enemies look.

Aliens? ruins on mars? have you people even played the original doom? sigh

This is the story: you are a marine stationed on a military base orbiting on the Mars moon of Phobos, the scientists there have been working on a teleportation device but the experiments go awry and open a gateway to hell. Pretty simple so far huh? but the plot unfolds as you play.

Sounds pretty original, an experiment that goes to hell and mars is an original planet used in most films and games.

I don't know what you're talking about, but Doom 3 is on Mars, not Phobos.
And there are ancient alien artifacts of some kind involved in the story.

I'm pretty sure DOOM3 is on Phobos this time around. The story isnt very professional if you ask me. You are a security guard on a Phobos research base. You leave and when you come back its hell infested. You have to kill these guys and go to Hell to find an artifact that closes the portal on Phobos.
Amazing, took about 2 lines to describe the entire story!
For shooters, I'm gonna pass on this one... At least until its really cheap.

You're a marine, one of Earth's toughest, hardened in combat and trained for action. Three years ago you assaulted a superior officer for ordering his soldiers to fire upon civilians. He and his body cast were shipped to Pearl Harbor, while you were transfered to Mars, home of the Union Aerospace Corperation. The UAC is a multi-planetary conglomerate with radioactive waste facilities on Mars and its two moons, Phobos and Deimos. With no action for fifty million miles, your day consisted of suckin' dust and watchin' restricted flicks in the rec room.

For the last four years the militaty, UAC's biggest supplier, has used the remote facilities on Phobos and Deimos to conduct varios secret projects, including reaserch on inter-dimensional travel. So far they have been able to open gateways between Phobos and Deimos, throwing a few gadgets into one and watching them come out the other. Recently however, the Gateways have grown dangerously unstable. Military "volunteers" entering them have either disappeared or been stricken with a strange form of insanity - babbleing vulgarities, bludgeoning anything that breathes, and finally suffering an untimely death of full-body explosion. Matching heads with torsos to send home to the folks became a full-time job. Latest military reports state that the reserch is suffering a small set-back, but everything is under control.

A few hours ago, Mars recieved a garbled message from Phobos. "We require immediate military support. Something fraggin' evil is coming out of the Gateways! Computer systems have gone berserk!" The rest was incoherent. Soon afterwards, Deimos simply vanished from the sky. Since then, attempts to establish contact with either moon have been unsuccessful.

You and your buddies, the only combat troop for fifty million miles were sent up pronto to Phobos. You were ordered to secure the perimeter of the base while the rest of the team went inside. For several hours, your radio picked up the sounds of combat: guns firing, men yelling orders, screams, bones cracking, then finally, silence. Seems your buddies are dead.

It's Up To You
Things aren't looking too good. You'll never navigate off the planet on your own. Plus, all the heavy weapons have been taken by the assault team leaving you with only a pistol. If only you could get your hands around a plasma rifle or even a shotgun you could take a few down on your way out. Whatever killed your buddies deserves a couple of pellets in the forehead. Securing your helmet, you exit the landing pod. Hopefully you can find more substantial firepower somewhere within the station.

As you walk through the main entrance to the base, you hear animal-like growls echoing throughout the distant corridors. They know you're here. There's no turning back now.

If they say, "Something fraggin' evil" in this game... I'm not buying it :p

Seems real bright for the marines to take a one-way ticket to this facility...at least have taken some kind of dropship and when the team goes to secure the area, have something happen to it or force the player to run inside, cutting him off from the only known escape.

With that entire post...the story is still quite simple, most of it is just back story that happens before we even start up the game. I'm interested in the events that happen once we start.

Oh n0es!! Bettar sh0ot it!11!!!1
*end of story after game starts*

There's one thing that worries me about Doom3, Will they be able to have 100's of enemies on screen? I mean, would it be a doom game without rooms totally filled with really nasty monsters?

^^ Nope. Besides the fact that most pc's won't be able to handle that, this time round they want to concentrate on more "intimate" encounters - for the scare factor.
