They just got a revised draft of the script and it's looking really good. According to his agent, it's the hottest property in Hollywood (but don't all agents say that?). "Our deal is actually putting time pressure on Warner Brothers to not sit and wait on the movie." Previous aborted attempts with both Columbia and Universal resulted in them just sitting on the rights. Getting savvier to Hollywood business, id signed a progress-to-completion deal. Meaning: they are taking no money up front, but putting WB under strict deadlines. According to the agent, this means, "You're not paying us, but you're paying someone to meet these deadlines. If you don't get a script by this date, get green lit by this one, if you don't start filming by a certain time, then the rights immediately come back to us."

Warner Brothers is taking DOOM very seriously, even putting it on a fast track. John Wells (known for producing ER) and Lorenzo Bonaventura (brought The Matrix, among others, to Warner Brothers) are working to get the movie made.

Hollenshead's Personal Hell Knight (Agent):

"I think DOOM 3 is a great property...and so do [Wells and Bonaventura]. So we're focused on a strong script and from there build the momentum to attract the right director and actors."

How much are you looking forward to this movie.

and if it does there is a 9/10 chance it will suck horribly.

It will suck the monkeh cock for sure. No doubt the twitchy bird with the funny nose from Fifth Element and Resident evil will be in it, that is how much it suck.

Oh boy am I looking forward to this movie, I mean if its anything like the trailer for house of the dead, it will suck donkey balls!

Doom movie... oh yay.

Im sure he can keep on acting, I mean, Cali does not need that much govering, and besides, arni dont know how to anyways

:borg: I'll be back as the governor of California and deport your ass.

I think hes done acting. At least untill hes done in office. Hes trying to be taken seriously, not constantly provoking more Terminator puns.

/me twitches.

"Get in the Choppa!"

"I'll be back"

Yeh, I knew about this a while ago, the whole rights changing hands thing. I didn't keep track of it however. And forgot about it. Wasn't this a couple years ago?

Well, it might well suck, but I hope it doesn't tbh :)

Would be quite fun to see how it turns out :D

Doom is great movie material. There wasn't much to the originals as far as story goes, but what they are doing with the next installment is much more complex than their previous SP games. When i hear Doom3 described, it sounds like it plays like a horror movie anyway. And if they handle it right, they could do some damn cool things with the movie.

I don't know why you guys are so negative about it. I guess fanboyism isn't reserved only for games around here. Whatever.

*Edit*

BTW, do you guys realize that, as your sitting in your chair reading this, you are actually moving at a rate of about 900km/s!

There is no such thing as absolute velocity so you can be moving as fast as you want (as long as it is less than the speed of light) depending on what frame of reference you want measure that velocity in.
The one that makes the most sense (even if it is unessesarity complex due to being non intertial) is to say when sitting on your ass your not moving.

And 99% chance of a doom movie sucking. I wish it was other wise but it ain't.

I heard somewhere that they wanted to make it PG... but I took it with a grain of salt.

A PG! ****ing hell, if it's anything below a 15 I won't see it. I just hope it isn't as bad as Tomb Raider.

DooM has no storyline to speak of. It was always just a rambo run'n'gun, even with the "yourbuddies are all dead" and "gates of hell on mars" and whatnot.

Needless to say the movie can be entertaining if they add a lot of gore and not a lot of random girlfriend who has no business in doom anyway.

Well, im sure the movie would be based more on DoomIII than the older ones, and DoomIII is a story driven game.

that sucks, I like doom with no storyline :(

edit: I swear, if they make you rely on a team...

Doom...[HERETICAL COMMENT] I never actually played it [/HERETICAL COMMENT]. Thought it looked quite bad actually...And if I didn't like the game, I won't like the movie. Right?

Oh wait! I did actually play Doom I! I got a demo on my old mac. I played it for 5 minutes, and then deleted it...

Somehow I doubt it can be too story driven. Think about it. Not much much character development, everyone's just going to die left and right and get all mutilated and be zombies. And theres not much room for mystery or plot twists. They're from hell. They're bad. Kill them. No questions asked. A fun game to play, a boring game to watch.

Well, your basically describing the old dooms and assuming the same applies to the new one. This game is being made pretending that the old dooms never even existed. They don't figure into it at all.

I'm sure there will be some basic amount of character development, since some NPCs will be very important to you and it has been hinted at that their motives are not always clear at first. In other words, important game characters like Sarge aren't static, but you learn more about their motives as the game progresses.

But character developpment obviously isn't a focal point of the story. Just look at the main character, he doesn't even have a name. Hes not really a character at all, he is just a anonymous vehicle through which you become a part of the world. So in a sense, YOU are the main character. However, the focal point of the story isn't character developemnt, but the developments of the events as they unfold. The invasion of hellspawn, why they are invading in the first place, what do they intend to do if they are left unapposed, how can they be stopped? These are the important elements of the story.

There is plenty of room for plot twists and mysteries. The game doesn't just put you in a world and say "here, see, the base is being over run by demons and such. You must kill them to win!" then 20hrs later its game over. The story evolves and develops as events unfold, just like any other.

There is a reason they hired a porfessional author to write the story. There is a reason they story boarded the entire game. And ill give you a hint as to what the reason is, it's not because the game lacks a story.

Aww, no way; I played Doom all through elementary school and sometimes I still go back and play Doom II. Well heck I even play Duke Nukem and Wolfenstein sometimes if I feel like it and I'd probably be playing Blood a lot if I still had it because that game was really fun. And Heretic and Hexen....

But I don't think a Doom movie would be that great; might be interesting to see though.

... that explains a lot..

doom was cool, it was a pioneer in gaming, everyone should recognize that, however, the movie can't help but be uneventful. at the very best, it could be an overblown hollywood gore/explosion fest. that's the best to hope for.

Doom could be a great movie, but the story, well a story needs to be set out first. They've got the basics but it needs sooo much more to succeed.. Half-Life on the other hand, thats all story and would be childs play to film. Even Duke Nukem would make a good film, only Arnie wont be making anymore films now and I don't think it would work with Van Damm or someone as the Duke heh

right, that's the point i didn't bother making.. if the movie has a story, then is it really a "doom movie" or is it just using the name? if it's a movie with a great story, i'd hardly consider it 'the doom movie', personally.

About 1/2 of all sci-fi movies come out crappy anyway. I don't know of a single sci-fi movie based on game that was any good.

Now how about a sci-fi movie based on a game with a gothic feel to it? Nope, sorry. But if they make it it's probably going to be kind of funny seeing this guy run around shooting deamons and spiders .. on Mars.

lol, rediculous.

Doom³ has a story! The movie wouldn't be based on the old DooMs(which virtually had no story at all), it would be based on the new Doom(which does indeed have a story).

yeah, to me doom will always be the fun rambo-style run-n-gun nonstorydriven game that I know and love. I think it would ruin it for me if there was a story. I just don't think a story belongs in doom, you know?

I'm not sure if I would like doom III as much if it had teamplay and npcs and ducking for cover and assessing battles and crap. well, maybe thats going a bit far, using the environment would be great, but not npcs :( I like being the lone hero.

To make a movie you need much more then a story! Even great story-driven games like Half-Life and Max Payne 2 would be super cheesy on the screen.

Anyway, I find it kinda funny that iD wants to take a game and "build" a story into it. As if they are adding a new monster or weapon or something. You don't build a story into a game, you build the game around a story.

we're going to need to download a 'story patch'. or maybe they'll wait, and just release the story in the expansion.

Just to be argumentative, I'd say that it would be way easier to make a movie out of DOOM than HL. In Half-Life the story is pretty much integral to the game. The stream of consciousness-ness of it all would be hard to replicate on the screen, because you'd be forced to remove detail as given. Doom, on the other hand, has only the basic premise behind it of demons teleporting into a secluded base. A filmaker could elaborate on that premise in any number of ways, while still keeping fans happy, since they're expanding the idea instead of condensing it.
