"Most old DOS games cannot run at all on recent PCs, most often because Windows does not allow direct access to the hardware. DOSBOX is a wonderful piece of software. It completely emulates the hardware of an old DOS-time PC, and therefore allows many old DOS games to run under Windows 2000/XP.
DOSBOX is an Sourceforge opensource project. It's free and you can download it from their site :

Hey guys I came across this program yesterday and was able to get Dungeon Master II -(1995 i think)to run in windownsXP. Dungeon Master is reported to run too (1987)

I've heard that you can run most all of your old DOS games in Windows 2000/XP.
For Ease of use put the game folder directly into C: and not in program files

Double-click on Dosbox.exe
Type:

mount c c:\nameofgamefolder
c:
nameofgame

Hit return to run game!

Have Fun!

YAY! Now I can upgrade to winxp and play that Matrix Online stress test beta if its still runing.

Yeah, DOSbox is okay, but I've actually had a ton of problems with it trying to run old games in the past.

Doesn't work too well with either X-Com or Out of this World for instance.

DarkStar, another thing you might try..

I had to edit the config of DOSBox and the config of the game, then I saved them as read only, just incase the game wants to change it- it can't.

It seems the dos games wont work if the sound isn't set correctly. I had to change IRQ from 5 to 7, the memory to 64MB, among other things I can't remember

I also set it up so its full screen, and increased the CPU cycles from 3000 to 10000. among other things. If you really want to get it to work, Im sure you can. I'll be happy to try and look at my config to help anyone.
Dungeon Master II is great!

I already knew about this.

Cannon Fodder FTW! (Its like Operation Flashpoint, in 1993)

"War! Never been so much fun, go to your buddy, kill him with your gun, leave him lying in his uniform dying in the sun!"

Yes, i've been using this for a while :D

Anywhos It seems to be able to play everything except 3d games good for me, but I only have .62

dosbox sucks ass.
I tried playing Terminator : Futureshock on it...
And it ran slow as hell.
It takes 20 seconds to look at all four sides of the screen ffs!

LOL
Im just gratefull to be able to play my favorite game of all time.

One alternative that might be good is to download the game for a different system, them download an emulator for that system.
For example: download dungeon master for the atari ST and download an atari ST emulator.
This seems like it might run alot faster.

I don't know of any other alternatives to DOSBox

I think the problem with DOSBox is that it has to emulate everything including sound and OS.

It's not going to run smooth scrolling 3D games well AT ALL

You can increase CPU cycles the preset of the new version is 3000. It ran fairly slow at this speed. I have it set to 10000 now and the game runs fast now.

I'm not sure what would be the max CPU cycles, and it warns against setting it too high in the notes. saying only "too high = BAD"

Yes, DosBox is the best... allows me to record some DOS games for my project.
