Any use DOSBox to play oldschool DOS games? I'm trying to play Ultima Underworld, and I've gotten it so that it runs fairly smoothly in a window, but unfortunately, it is a 300x400 (or something close to that) window on my 1280x1024 desktop, which makes it fairly hard to see what's going on. When I try to go fullscreen, it completely crushes my system - both cores go to 100% (or near it) and the game gets really jerky. I wouldn't think playing a DOS game would be so hard on a Core 2 Duo E6300, 2GB of RAM and a 8800GT (compatibility issues aside). Has anyone had any luck configuring DOSBox to run well in full screen mode?

As a side note, if you're looking for any REALLY old games you want to relive, check out www.abandonia.com ... I found both Ultima Underword 1 & 2 there - and I haven't played 2, so I'd love to get this working.

I used dosbox to play Lotus Esprit Turbo Challenge and LHX Attack Chopper... Good games :D

Had no issues with crashing, although it does depend on the game. I tried Evasive Action and it was choppy as hell. I got a much better framerate on my 25mhz 486sx back in the days.

Well I wasn't exactly crashing, but the game is pretty much unplayable due to the horrid performance in full screen mode.

I only use it to play Commander Keen and King's Quest VII. Commander Keen is kind of jerky, and I couldn't do full screen with either game. That site looks awesome, by the way.

Ha, Return to Zork. Oh, sweet, and Kyrandia.

I use it for loads of old games. Its a great great great app. And yes, abandonia is a wonder to behold as well.

I probably use ScummVM more though since those are my favorite games of all time. :D

But then again, having a 300x400 resolution game doesn't half look pixellated on a 1280x1024 screen

I don't mind pixellated, I just can't see ANYthing going on in the game because the viewport is so small.

Take a look at their readme, as I recall DOSBox defaults to limiting the speed of games so old ones (the ones without proper timing controls) still run fine.
