Download Limits

How do ISP download limits work? Do websites apply or is it only large downloaded content such as downloadable files? What about pictures? And p2p programs?
Cheers - I'm new to this limit malarky.

Do you have a bandwidth limitation or are you just refering to the download speeds? More info please.

If your connection has a bandwidth limit then you can only download/upload so much per month etc.

The ISP measure every byte coming through them to you. Once your max level of bytes is reached, they don't allow any more through untill the next limit period. Basically, everything you download, websites, picutes, p2p and email etc all add to your limit.

Every little piece of information that is sent and recieved is counted as the bandwith used. Including websites, gaming online, etc.

As to what happens if you go over the limit, it depends on the ISP I guess. Some might cancel your internet until the next alottment, but others, like mine... will charge you for the extra bandwith that you go over. My ISP isn't money hungry, they just charge the same rate as the current plan I have divided by how much extra I went over. So its not like i'm paying extra per the extra bandwith, just the same amount as if I had a payment plan that extended out to that much. Confusing eh?

Yeah, it's about 25 miles East of Leeds.

Basically, at the moment I'm with ntl with a 1.5Mb connection and no download limit. In the first quarter of next year, it's being upgraded to 3Mb, but with a download limit of 40Gb. That wouldn't be so much of a problem if the connection wasn't used by 8 people, thus the strain on the limit's going to be a bit more.
So, every single bit of info transferred to us over the 'net is going to count towards this limit. Every little bit?

Every little byte. But trust me, it takes 1000 bytes to make a kilobyte. 1000 kilobytes to make a megabyte. 1000 megabytes to make a gigabyte.
(Actually 1024 but hey.)
100,000,000 Bytes per gigabyte. CS:S barley uses anything... even if you played it 24/7 for a month. An average website with a flash navigation and everything probably would be around 200kb to 1mb. An average website page(no flash no images) probably around 3kb. With images maybe 400kb.

Trust me, downloading a 600 meg file every day for 30 days would result in 18,000 megs being dled. Thats 18 gigs. Trust me, you have more than enough. You will probably only get around 20 - 150 megs a day depending on what you do(Through 8 of you). HL2 only took up 3.5gigs. Hell 40 gigs is half my hard drive. You have much more than enough per month.

Fair enough - 5Gb each is pretty good I guess, especially as most people won't come close to reaching a fifth of that.
There's just one guy who's constantly d/ling - we'll just have to curb him I guess.

Increase your temp internet file cache, so you arent redownloading website graphics etc. that could work to lower your bandwidth usage although its not really safe. You can use someting called netmeter to monitor how much bandwidth and total bandwidth you are using.
On a 3 meg line, 40gbs will go fast... it would for me anyway.

I would say I far exceed 5gb's a month, everymonth. Luckily I have no limit on how much I can download and upload.

Mycomputer: Download game demo's, mods, adobe documents, online gaming, websites, Streaming music on windows media, downloading 3dbuzz vtms, Installing game updates, windows messanger, Run a team speak server for my friends whenever we are playing online.

MyBrother's:Still plays age of empires 2 online, websites and thats about it.

MyMom Email, lots of family pictures she downloads (email attachments) and websites.

MyDad:VPN, Email and websites.

Just my bandwidth in the last 2 weeks is already a lot
-World of Warcraft
-America's army
-some VTMS from 3dbuzz on doom3, farcry and 3ds spline modelling.
-Ichi's weapon modelling VTM's for 3ds
-Windows Media streaming
-Games, Games, Games and teamspeak.
-Downloaded the IloveBees dvd from fileplanet.
-Driver update for videocard
-Some windows updates

See that there is already in excess of 5gb's

The aol ads on tv are funny, they have someone going over the limit on a different isp and a window with "WARNING" in big red letters coming up and their internet getting cut off lol.. afaik usually nothing will happen but if you keep dling too much every month your isp will threaten to cut you off

AOL have been very proud to flaunt that they have no download limit as if this sets them apart from so many ISPs whilst in this country, BT and Wanadoo do, but Blueyonder and ntl don't and the latter two are big contenders. ntl, of course, soon will, but the free speed upgrades they've been giving their customers recently is impressive (ie: just before I signed up it was 1Mb, then upgraded to 1.5 for free and soon to 3Mb - that's pretty generous and really sets them apart)

Ntl do, 1gb/day. The upgrade is only free if you are a new customer, everyone else has to pay £25.
