Hrm. Did a search, and was a 'tad'(notice, not very much) bit surprised to see that no thread mentions Dr Laura. Growing up my dad and uncle used to listen to her on the radio, and naturally I hated it. Talk radio. Bleh, crappy stuff. However, now that i'm an adult of a few years, this kind of stuff is much more interesting. The things Dr Laura talks about make sense to me now, and I find myself sharing many of the same views as her.

So i'm curious. Who here has ever heard of Dr. Laura, and who here has read any of her books? When I was in California, at my aunt's house I picked up their copy of "The Proper Care & Feeding Of Husbands", one of her latest books.

Damn weird name, almost borderline on 'sexist', but its surprisingly misleading. The book is meant for not only females, but guys as well. Heh. I've found she has some awesome views and advice, and is opposed to the feminist movements yet a staunch defender of women. Parental and Relationship advice from this woman is amazing, from what i've read and heard of her work.

Any of you older guys on these forums ever been mature enough to read some of this stuff? This isn't a topic for you teenagers unless by some rare chance, you've actually read her work.

So if you've advanced beyond the stage of being simply a horny teen and strive for more in your life in regards to relationships and stuff, in my opinion you cannot go wrong with dr laura.

Haven't read it, but it certainly seems interesting. I may check it out when I have free time.
So, has it helped you or anyone you know improve their relationships?

I remember taking road trips and my parents would listen to her all the time.

Once I actually listened to her anit-gay bigotry and her cheerleading for Bush I couldn't take it anymore. Isn't she the one that preaches family and moral values? For those that buy that bullshit do a search for her on Google Images with the parental locks off (if you are 18+).

I hate hate HATE her. She doesn't listen to anyone. She just yells at people like they're stupid. Never lets anyone finish speaking. Oh, and her degree isn't even in her field. I hate her. She's sexy. Wait, no. Not sexy.

so what is she all about, summaries her point and perspectives, (if you can)

She's old man. It'd be like finding your grammy hot.

And yeah, i'm sure just as many who like her, hate her views. Its probably one of those love or hate things. But truth be told, her show isn't about a couple conversations, its about examples and advice that she gives to the majority of the audience. A caller calls in and gives their story, if possible, she helps them through the big problems she sees by explaining and getting more information from the individual, and then when she's done with the call, she gives more lengthly advice after she has disconnected with the individual to convey to the rest of the audience as of advice, and for the original caller.

Though, I wouldn't call her method 'yelling at people like they're stupid'. She's like a counselor. She's going to tell you how it is.

Heh. I haven't finished the book. I just read the first chapter or so before having to leave.

I haven't heard her say anything anti-gay or pro bush. She doesn't seem to get into politics. Maybe you're thinking of someone else, or maybe that was just something i haven't heard. I only listened to her a few times. And even then, she never seemed pro bush, and definately not 'anti-gay'.

I just have one question though. Whats wrong with family values? You like the idea of ****ed up dysfunctional families that are causing all kinds of problems? Failed marriages, divorces, seperations, and so many things as well that effect families and scar kids for life to spawn further problems with the families they form.

Tell me. What the hell is so 'wrong' with 'values'? Tell me. What is it? Is it liberal propoganda? lol. That anything with 'values' is wrong? I dunno, to me... her advice and stuff is non political, and seeks to strengthen the family bond so that the wives and husbands and kids are happy. Whats wrong with that? What do you see wrong?

i know nothing about her, but in the pic she looks like a bitch

Heh. Damn. I post a topic about books and counseling of someone, and you guys go searching for grannie porn. I see where your desires lie.

I am all for REAL family values. I am not for people that say legal gay marriage, pornography or sex education will be the end of all family (Bush). These people are usually the biggest hypocrites out there; since we are on the topic of Dr Laura she is the best example of this absolute hyporacy. If you haven't done a google image search (I don't blame you) she has a bunch of nude photos of her online from I believe the 70s or 80s.

Again, nothing wrong with actually imporving families or REAL family values. But Republicans spun family values to not mean drug education, welfare to help feed families, more education/support programs for families, keeping parents out of jail over non-violent crimes, but instead they made it mean no gay marriage and no sex ed. Dr. Laura is one of the many people on the radio and TV helping drive this false talking point which is destroying this country. The political genious behind this is the the republicans with this 2 letter phrase ("family values") have made it seem that if you are for all those programs I mentioned and for gay marriage you are anti-family when in reality the exact oppisite is true. How do I know they did this? You just implied that I am anti-family when I criticise the republican agenda for "family values". I don't mean this as an insult but people like you need to finally wake up and stop listening to these stupid talking points put out by the right wing through mediums like Dr. Laura's show and actually look at the real issues that plague this county.

Okay. Dude. Stop. I'm not talking about homosexual shit. I'm not talking about all that political crap. I'm only talking about the husband and wife relationship stuff... with the whole female/male dynamic going on that she discusses, which I have found to be very insightful for both genders of either side of the issue.

I'm not on here raving about Dr Laura as a human being. I'm on here talking about her views on male/female... husband/wife relationships which 'most' of us on these forums engage in. Unless you are all homosexual, which is fine, but then it wouldn't be for you.

all the family counselers should have their long noses cut off

sorry, it just counslers have no value in my book

If you didn't want to talk about politics then you must have missed the part where it says politics forum. Discussion about her views and how she bainwashes her listeners to follow these views (without you even knowing she is doing it) is applicable to the politics board. If you want to talk about relationships the general off-topic chat would be the place for that. Since you didn't do that I won't stop anything and I will post my views on her which are dead on, even if you don't like them. Sorry, I am open minded like that.

Alright, then I posted this on the wrong forum and meant to post it in off-topic. Simple mistake. But... as per what you say, to be brainwashed, you have to be a blank disc. I'm not one, so nobody is really going to brainwash me, as for many others.

And i'll tend to agree with you, your views about her anti-gay agenda are probably dead on. Thats it though, as the whole husband/wife boyfriend/girlfriend relationship advice she gives is pretty rock solid. Unless of course you're the type of person that would encourage a party to ignore/neglect/sabotage/avoid and do so many other negative things to the relationship and the other partner.

And the same advice would likely even be able to be used for homosexual couplings, despite the lack of 'support'. Since a man is a man, and a woman is a woman, for the most part, whether gay or not. Read the first chapter or so, including the beginning and introduction things as well, and tell me that is not solid advice. You'd have to be a ****ing uncaring, unloving brute to your partner to believe otherwise. lol

I have nothing against her giving relationship advice even if she doesn't have any professional medical, psychiatric, or psychological credentials . What I think of that advice I can get in to in a general chat board but that stuff doesn't really interest me as the politics of it does. So if you want start a thread about her advice in the general chat thats fine, but stick around here for me to explain to you how people like her are destroying this country with the anti-family rhetoric they spit out on a constant basis (even though they claim to be for "family values"). I already explained this, if anyone wants to dispute it be my guest.
