Broken Sword creator Charles Cecil and Sheffield-based studio Sumo Digital have been signed up to make Doctor Who: The Adventure Games.

The episodic, PC/Mac games are billed as an extra four episodes for the new 13-show series five run which began in the UK during the Easter weekend.

But most importantly: the games are made in very close collaboration with the show's new production team - and they are completely free.

The Adventure Games consist of four downloads of around 250MB featuring the eponymous Doctor and his companion Amy in encounters with iconic enemies - actors Matt Smith and Karen Gillan have supplied their likeness and voices to the game.

Cybermen? Seriously? Give me a Dalek, for god's sake.

But seriously, I'm just hoping it's not as boring as the last two Broken Sword games were (not that I have anything to complain about, it being free and all, but it's still the first Doctor Who game and it deserves to be good).

THAT CYBERMAN DOESN'T HAVE A CYBRUS INDUSTRIES LOGO ON HIS CHEST! YES!

Looks like it could be good. Will see.

Nice, now Doctor Who can blow in another medium! Even free, I refuse.

Charles Cecil lol

Well, that's cool I guess.

I still need to check out the series.

Well, that's good to know!

Thanks for looking out for me, Sammy. :)

daleks murdered my wife and kids, sold my dog into slavery, and left me for dead

meow its time for revenge

I'm guessing point & click games?

From Sumo and Cecil being involved I'm guessing it'll be running on their Broken Sword 3/4 engine, so point and click is almost a certainty, which would be a good thing.

It'd work well with dr who.

UK only? What the shit?

Also...
If you live outside the UK, the first Adventure Game will be available to purchase in early July.

Uh... I thought they were releasing it for free?

edit:
I don't see the harm in letting non-UK people get the game so here's the link.

Installed it.

Started it.

Typed in my name. Each key pressed counted for 10+ key presses. WTF?

Clicked start game. Loading screen.

Crash.

So it's UK only and free, but really not UK only and you have to pay for it?

Looks like the tv licence in the UK is paying for it. Like hell its free, your still paying for it in tax.

It's probably got an IP filter, though that may be foolable. It's 'free' because made by the BBC and therefore paid for by the national TV licence fee, and also because the BBC's public service remit seems quite sensible to have been determined to include using a very famous, popular licence to introduce as many people as possible to one of the country's biggest industries.

I played it for a little while, but my computer's buggered right now and I crashed just after pushing the taxi. It seemed fun, but at the same time, the control system was fantastically awkward and unresponsive, and the cut-scenes were really weirdly paced, wth long pauses between items of dialogue. I wasn't sure whether this was the game or just my PC.

Oh I didn't think this was going to be out till after the current series was over. I bet it was rushed like hell but I'll give it a go anyway.
