I got to go to the O'Reily summer nationals in the NHRA drag racing series yesterday in Topeka. It was f*cking awesome!! You really have no idea how fast these cars are going until you watch from the finish line.

I didn't take any pictures, but I have a link to the NHRA website, they have videos and pictures of the races and cars and stuff.

I drag race between stop-lights in my town. I've got the launch down to a fine art.

One of my favorite videos of a 4-rotor 3rd gen RX7

Drag racing is really boring to watch, I'd much rather have a track day then go down a straight track timing my shifts

Oh, don't get me wrong, I'd rather watch track racing, over drags. But seeing some insanely fast cars is always a plus.

What is the point of going around in circles?

The real talent rides in the ability to control your car.

there's nothing more phallic than a drag race car. i love it.

Jap cars... *cringes* :P The RX7's look good though. Your all wrong about racing I say. Racing is not about going from point A to B or going around in circles. It's about timing, the welders who make the cars, the machinists, the people who build engines, etc. They have special schools to train welders to make special weldments for racing and special schools for pit crews. All just for a race that will last a couple of hours. Some cases just a few seconds like in drag racing. Rather than viewing NASCAR as a redneck sport, I would like people to change their views about racing. *Oh and I'm sorry Pitz but I still love the roar of an American made muscle car, the '71 Chevy Barracuda:

he had a crap reaction time. You go when the last light before green goes on.
Racing is about being able to make the fastest possible car and being able to control all of the power that you put into it.

He did not have a crap reaction time. Wikipedia explains it the best:
To allow different cars to compete against each other, some competitions are raced on a handicap basis, with faster cars delayed on the start line enough to theoretically even things up with the slower car.
The Barracuda is so fast that it has to wait a few seconds so the slower car can have some sort of chance of winning. Racing is not about going the fastest and controlling it. It's about strategy and teamwork with the pit crew and pit crew leader. Sometimes two racers are friendly and will hold off other cars so his friend can pass up. It's obvious that you don't know much about racing. :| *They even have to calculate how much tire pressure to prevent the tire from skidding: Also new tires are the worst in driving conditions. You want them hot so they stick to the road. That's why they swaying around before racing, they are warming up the tires and are wearing them out a little. Or if they are drag racing they take off a little to warm up the tires.

And how the hell is going down a straight-away controlling your car?

(not saying it isn't, just curious as to your viewpoint)

He was not racing anyone else. There wasn't another car racing him. And his light was green for a long time before he went. and I know that you have to melt the tires. Do you know how it is that they make the track sticky, in drag racing? They spray a mixture of gasoline and glue on the track, then they light it on fire to make it hot and sticky. That last sentence sounds really worng.

EDIT; I forgot to respond to sinkoman. It takes a lot of control to keep the car in the groove and to keep the tires from spinning down the track. When you are that close to a wall and the tires start spinning, it is very easy to lose your car.

Ah.

My point of view is that circuit racing condenses all aspects of motorsport into one event, drag racing included.

You figure that if you try to pass somebody on the outside and end up neck and neck, you basically have a drag race on your hands down the straight and to the next corner.

I generally don't get the point of going in circles. However I do enjoy sprint races, and road races.

I was actually at Mason Dixon dragway in MD today...got a nasty sunburn too. I was running my mustang, didn't run as fast as I'd like though. :|

Tell me you're joking....the Barracuda is a Plymouth. MOPAR BABY, MOPAR!!

Mustang?? Info please, What year, how fast, etc. etc. etc.

92 GT (fox body), my best run today was a 13.66 @ 101.37mph. I was having traction issues. I think I can pull a 13.0-13.1 out of it.

^^That be my ride. I also have a '91 toyota camry as my beater car. It looks like shit but runs great.

If by circles you mean super speedways and speedways, then yes, I hate those.

But you can't tell me that GP2 is boring!

Nice, my girlfriend's 'Vette was only running 14.375 when she last raced it.

EDIT: after watching the video, you've done things to it... Now I have questions...

What is GP2? If if is like a winding type of track, then I like it, I just really dislike ovals and left turns.

Ah, I see now. Thank you for enlightening me.
