Ok all, allow me to prerequisite this whole thing by telling you what drew me to theorize about all of this. Last night I had this dream, it was about a place that I've been before (in another dream), and a girl that I've met before (in another dream). It was this large apartment complex, that I've never seen in real life mind you (none of the architecture reminds me of anything that I've seen in the physical world)... But apparently I lived there. Well this place was huge, and had many corridors, and many different apartments whithin itself. last time I had a dream of this place, I got really lost and couldn't find my apartment. But this time, I remembered the last dream! Which was really weird, and I knew how to navigate the corridors to get me back to my house.

The girl, which is really the main focus of the dream, was also in the last dream I had that involved this apartment complex. We still knew eachother, she was about to leave in this dream, she was flying to Russia. This wasn't any kind of wet dream or nothing like that, her and I were really good friends, in love I think.

I've had recurring dreams in the past. However, this wasn't the same dream, all the actors, and locations were the same, but the events were totallly different. Which got me thinking about dreams, what they mean... etc.

There are a few things I am curious about, for instance, do you think its possible to have deja' vu in a dream?

I believe personally, that a dream state is an astral state. Where in the mind for the most part leaves the body and goes to another plane of existence. Lucid dreaming, imo, is when your mind fully "disconnects" and enters this place. You become aware, and in control. A normal dream, one that doesn't involve any "direct" control from you, is most likely your mind in a state of "limbo", still in the physical, and partially in the astral. A theory that I haven't really fleshed out yet is that, in dreams, other "actors" (as i'll call them for lack of better terminology) are real humans, existing in the physical at this point and time.

You may have never met, or even seen these actor's real life counterpart. And you may never. But in your dreamstate you know them, you've probably met them there before. I thinik when you dream of one of these people they more than likely are there with you, and their physical body is having a similar dream, or it doesn't remember it all together. Possibly the dreams you don't remember, you are there with them and they are having a dream about you.

I don't know, its just something to contemplate, whilst i'm hung over. So either give me your take on it, or allow this thread to descend and burn in the pits of hl2.net hell with all my others D:

- Good day -

D: D: D:

I believe dreams are just like daydreaming, except you don't control it. But your theory sounds cooler.

That sounds interesting... So you are saying maybe that daydreams you can control, but dreams when you're asleep are maybe products of what your subconcious mind wish to exhibit?

I don't think there's any sort of "projection" going on. I guess this is the scientific and logical view. The brain is just electric impulses. Your mind can't "leave" your body. Saying that it does is just a clever metaphor. Dreams are just what your mind does in idle time, the fact that sometimes you can control the dreams (lucid) is nothing more than you realising it's a dream and you are just "thinking" all this stuff and therefor, hey, it's your mind, think what you want and therefore dream what you want.

Dreams are just thoughts. Not all of them happen from a first person perspective. It's just like thinking or day dreaming. It can be whatever, but it's usually first person because, well, all of your day is spent first person and it would make sense that your dreams would mostly reflect that.

I've got a ton of thoughts on this but I have to eat breakfast now.

i've also had dreams which seem to 'continue on' from past dreams, it's strange.

your theory about the others being -real- humans is pretty interestng, i don't think i've ever thought about it that way before.

anyone have recurring dreams which do strange things to them ? i have one i've had once every few years, and it's not a good dream.

i'm nowhere, i'm moving out of control, there are 'things' everywhere, it's strange, there is abstract shapes/geometry, things i can't even describe in words (and i would say i have a decent vocabulary and 'above the average').. it makes me feel horrible, horrified, intrigued, confused and a bunch of other words which come to mind.

when i move, i will either be 'comfortable' (though still feeling all the words above) or it will become worse. also, i have -never- done drugs, drunk alcoholo or whatever, so i wasn't overdosed on anything, the first time it happened (that i can remember) was when i was like 8 or something, just a normal kid. D:

i dread having this dream, every time i have had it i have been 'weird' and very sick for a couple of days, than i'll suddenly become fine and forget about it.

i haven't had it in a year or 2, and i hope i don't have it again.. actually, i'm somewhat looking forward to having it again, so i can figure it out or whatever. :x

Nothing to do with astral planes or shite like that.

It's basically the brains way of "defragging" at the end of the day.
Memory compression and sorting, basically parts of the mind act like RAM during the day, dreaming refreshes and stores what is needed.

It's all enclosed in your head, if you kept a man in a dark room, he would dream of nothing but what he could construct from inside the room.

Most people have millions of memories and experiences in their heads, many complex things can be created within a dream but all have relevance, you are unlikely to make sense of something that is not meant to make sense for conscious thought.

Trust me i know, i am much more in tune with my brain functions regardless of current imput than anyone else.

Well, you have a CPU and a harddrive for a brain.

heh interesting (the defragging reference)...

And thats a very peculiar dream destrukt. So it actually makes you physically sick for a day or two afterwards? I can see why you dread having that one then. I can't say i've ever experienced one such as that, but I have had dreams that seemed to alter my thinking/thought process, and the way that I look at things.. Like an evolutionary mind step, if that makes sense.

Destrukt, perhaps you become sick THAT night and it causes the dream to happen.

I think I know the feeling you describe, but in my case it's just regular objects and stuff you see every day (a monitor, desk, chair, etc.). When I look at them they appear to be moving and they sort of... fast forward and then slow down immediately and it makes me uneasy as hell. Fascinating but scary :|

I don't know about you guys but my dreams are extremely unstable, things continously undergo metamorphis.

You're walking down a corridor of a hospital, suddenly it's the school corridor, then at the end it opens out into a class room which after another second is suddenly your house, it's even worse with objects and people.

Most of my dreams make no sense whatsoever, no coherant plots or stories just random events and things changing at random.

It ****ing pisses me off.

The reason you experince deja vu and know where to go is because your mind is creating the apartment as you go along. The girl is also a character created by your mind, and is probably a culmination of several people that you have met.

You see, the brain renders dream images in a a way similar to how a graphics card renders a 3d scene, it has to continually refresh the image, making sense of the random firings in your brain, and will create new scenes as you move along or look in a new direction. If you look away from something in a dream, your mind forgets about it, and doesnt "draw" it, but when you look back it has to recreate the scene entirely from memory, a process which results in gross errors which you are likely to overlook.

This is why spinning in a dream will cause everything to go black and will either transport you to another scene or cause you to wake up. The brain cannot keep up with drawing the scene continually and so everything becomes a blur.

My point is, it may seem like you've been to a place in your dreams before, but really you only experience deja vu because your mind relies on memory and experience to draw the scene. Every surface in that apartment is a culmination of surfaces you have seen in the past, every room a combination of rooms you've been in before, this is why it seems so familiar.

The next time you're in that dream, make a point to recognize your surroundings, and you will become lucid. At that point you can look for obvious flaws. Look at a clock and then look back, and you will discover that the time changes. Drop something on the ground, look away and look back and it will be gone. Stare at the face of the girl, and then step back and you will notice her body/clothes have changed. It was very interesting for me to see all of this happening in my dreams, and really gave me a rush at first. It's surprising how many things you don't notice while you're dreaming.

personally, I have a recurring dream about once a month that is very strange, yet I've had it all my life since I was probably about six. This dream always occurs in the same manner, and I am always half-conscious, and yes, it does make me sick. I beleive you are experiencing night terrors. Generally mine occur only when I was sick to begin with, which is probably what is causing yours. Mine usually involve an unusual sensation arising from being deaf while loud things go on around you. For instance, I'll be watching a nuclear explosion, and all of the sudden I'll go deaf, just sitting there watching the explosion, and the sound will cut in and out every so often, giving me a very nauseating sensation. My night terrors can generally be described as being similar to the movie in The Ring.

It's like that for me. Everything changes around, and while it makes sense in the dream, once I wake up I wonder what the hell just happened.

I do occasionally have dreams which are consistent, but they're always rather boring, I never have dreams with a plot, things just happen. It kinda sucks, especially when other people are talking about these awesome dreams :P
I've had just a handful of decent dreams, usually have occured when i'm either really tired or ill, so you can see why i havn't had many.

Usually the good dreams involve ford granadas, volvos and guns

I have Deja Vu going places I've never been before or doing things I've never done before in real life.

Any explanations for that?

Complex mind mechanics, the mind is basically a huge "road map" of interconnecting neurons, the way they connect memories associate with each other, memories may be triggered by various routes, thus linking them.

The brain continously readjusts these pathways, especially during sleep and dreams.

Similarities can trigger Deja Vu.

I think the most disturbing dream I have had is a recurring deam. For example I fell asleep and dreamt I did a full day at school. I wake up and goto school. I wake up again and goto to school thinking this was the real deal.

Wakes up again...this time for real.

I've had a weird dream (not reoccuring) where I could acctually control what I wanted, instead of the sometimes uncontrollable dreams. Some I feel that I can control my actions and some I can't. This one felt really weird like I could acctaully control myself.

Anyways, I remember I am running on a huge highway at high noon, very hot, under an airplane with all my stuff and, the I am wishing that I was on the plane, and just like the Nightcrawler from X-Men, I suddenly appear in the airplane with everyone. I wished that would happen and boom, it's there. Later on someone opens the door to the plane and its all windy and noisy and you can see the outside. When he closes it I get a feeling to open the door and when I do, thee outside was changed into a hotel hallway, just line the airplane I was a huge flying hotel room that wasnt moving. So I enter the nearly endless hotel hallway. I shut the door to the aiplane and I look around. Really creppy looking hotel like The Shining but with no one at all inside. I can't find the right door back to the airplane. I reminded me of the backdoors used in the 2nd Matrix movie. Then I woke up. Really weird.

I think Terminator is onto something with this road map of interconnecting neurons theory, some dreams like this keep reminding me of movies and acctual places I've been. Not all of them though.

No, dreaming is more like TV for your brain when you're asleep. It'll mostly be flicking through the channels, looking for soemthing to watch, and then it'll find a cool action flick, or stoner movie, or horror film and watches it the whole way through, and these are the episodes you remember.

Dreams that you can control are called lucid dreams. They are very cool.

I've said this before, but I'll say it again

Most of my dreams, maybe 2 outa 3 times that I dream, have Worf from Star Trek:TNG in them, no bullshit, and I have no idea why

dreams are best to be interpretted by a group of people first, then you interpret them. so good job on that.
if you really want good nitty gritty on dreams read a book called Crisis Dreaming, its alot to do with divorce but it is a real good read if you want to learn more about dreams. Read also about Freud's thoughts about dreams before you start annoucing astral states and such.

One time I had a dream where I was biking with this person, never seen this person before, and then the next day (the day when I woke up), I met the person! He looked the same, acted the same, everything THE SAME.

I HAVE THE POWER TO CREATE HUMAN BEINGS!

Didn Sigmund Freud wrote the 'interpretation of dreams'? anyway, i get lots of deja vus in my life that when i was 8, one of my dreams saved my ass (in my dream i got a hit by a car, but in real life i avoided it). i love dreams cuz they keeps me fascinated by how my mind works and sees. our actions and thoughts influences our dreams. i took Psychology in high school last year and we had to do this dream log for 1 week. i was amazed by how much differences my dreams had. i had this really funny dream where i was making fun of Osama bin Laden's turban that he shot me in the chest with his AK-47...it was painful in the dream...

Ever hear of capitals in your sentence? Or rather than that - grammar?

My dreams usually start off where I commit a crime or an unspeakable act without realising it.

I had a dream a few days ago where I was in my house, however it seemed to turn into a crack den and on the side of my house was a posse of gansta's etc. and I was dressed in the thick jacket, long pants and beanie I was wearing before sleeping that night (Yes, it gets cold in Australia.).

I then walked inside my house and everything went into a kind of cartoon mode without colour and a legless obese women was laying on my parent's bed with a child sleeping on her crutch, I ran outside again in fear. This old man in a snazzy suit with the same voice as that Texas character off The Simpsons approached me and told me to go inside and identify everything he pointed to:

"Pool..."
"Desk..."
"Chair..."
etc.

He then said "Son, you could lose all of this if you keep living the way you do now." (NOTE: I don't hang out with a posse of gang members, do drugs or live in a crack den.) I was utterly confused and noticed he was holding a pair of handcuffs so I ran out my front door and took my car. This random was also sitting in the car dressed the same as me yelling "Let's cheese it, Dan!". I have no idea how to drive but I seemed to do it flawlessly, dodging traffic and pedestrians getting away from the FBI (I think it was the FBI) GTA stlye.

I then came to an intersection on the bottom of the hill, I took a turn left and went through the drive-way of McDonalds :| I ordered a Large Quarter-Pounder with Cheese Meal but before I could pay for it ninjas were on top of the roof of the building dropping bowling balls on the car, the stranger and I that were in the car jumped out and ran to the traffic island on the top of the hill and the ninjas were throwing bowling balls still at me and the random.

I looked down the hill and saw a blockade of police cars and the cast of NCIS yelling at each other about marbles. I ran the opposite way, I don't remember what happened but I ended up down the road from where I lived, I was near the traffic lights and an Asian man in a white car with painted flames and neon lights pulled up and just stared at me. He was just randomly shot in the head but the windows nor windshield were damaged, and I had the feeling I killed him. But I took the car and drove it home, my house was normal and my mother and sister were standing outside. I got out of the car and tried to explain what happened but I coudn't talk, my mother or sister didn't really care.

I forgot what happened again, but I ended up sitting in the car I stole with my mother driving it down a highway, I asked everyone in the car to pinch me incase this was a dream. The odd thing was I actually felt the pinches on my elbow, and I was starting to consider that maybe I did get escape federal pursuit, killed a man and stole his car. But I woke up. D:

Occasionally I get a random dream were I'm walking around naked and it's not untill I almost wake up that I remember that walking around naked is imbarrising.

I dream of cuban revolutionaries and Native American spirits. AT THE SAME TIME.
