A mechanic today insisted he had been harshly treated after being banned from driving for watching a computer game on a console mounted on his car dashboard.

Harsh...But watching a rally game of all things while driving, is not a good idea. You could so easily kill several people. Having a screen in the front of the car is actually, technically, illegal anyway...
