Yo.

So, I picked up a DS Lite at the weekend, bundled with Metroid Prime: Hunters. Pretty solid game so far, except my rather mutant-esque hands are struggling to use the stylus and move at the same time. I think it's giving me premature arthritis.

Anyhoo, I obvioulsy want to add to my collection somewhat, and unfortunately the GAME in which I bought my system was barren to say the least. FIFA 06 and Star Wars Episode III were among the no-appeals in the shop.

For starters, I'll be purchasing MarioKart DS. Nuff said. What additional games can you, the membership of halflife2.net, suggest for a DS newbie?

Cheers.

Welcome to the club :)

Oendan is arguably the best game on the DS. It's a superb rhythm action title with kickass music. You'll have to import it (check out play-asia), but don't let that put you off - it'll still work out cheaper than walking into Game and buying a game from there.

The new Mario Brother is very good, and my personal fave at the moment (it craps all over the poor Sonic Rush)

Brain Training is great if you have some friends or family who'll want to 'train' quite regularly. 10 mins 2-4 times a week is enough.

Advance Wars is one of the best strategy games around - and quite cheap these days. I lost alot of hours to this.

There's loads of good games on the DS - Meteos, Trauma Centre, Animal Crossing, Castlevania, Yoshi's Touch and Go (my most played DS title), Band Bros., Kirby's Paintbrush, Mario and Luigi: Partners in Time, Phoenix Wright, Tetris (don't underestimate how awesome this is in two player) .......... the problem is finding the time and/or the money to play them all.

The two games i'm considering at the moment are Electroplankton and Jump Superstars.

I hope you enjoy your dsl - imo it's the best console since the N64 :)

Warbie - good man.

I'm popping across the road for my lunch soon, there's another shop here I can have a butchers at the games you've kindly listed.

I was looking at the new Mario Bros. game, but it apparently wasn't out D:
I'll be sure to check amazon and the like as well.

Cheers! :)

So Warbie has taken care of the really popular ones, but there are some others that are equaly as fun like Bomberman, Super Princess Peach, Viewtiful Joe: Double Trouble, Kirby: Canvas Curse, Super Mario 64 DS, and Zoo Keeper. It just depends what you are into. The DS has surprised the heck out of me and I absolutely love it and I am glad more people like you are getting into it too! Enjoy!!!

Good call on Bomberman - definately one of the best multiplayer games on the DS.

Have you got Super Princess Peach, Victim? I was temtped to try it out the other day.

I love my DS and I only have one game so far. I got the New Super Mario Bros game. Lots of fun. I play it every night before I go to sleep. Plus, the little mini games are addicting too. :)

Mandatory Mario Bros games. Kart, New SMB and even Partners in Time if you like RPG's.

I'm trying to get a hold on Castlevania. Hopefully should have it soon.

Thanks for all the information lads, I'll collate all of that and get fired through it asap.

I think it's safe to assume the majority of first party games will be of undeniable quality, so games like SMB, MK DS and the like are all in the pipeline. Meteos does seem a fairly popular choice along with brain training.

Can't wait, I'll be adding to the catalogue within the week. But - does no one else have Hunters? If I ever get around from changing my broadband to wireless, multiplayer could be an option. Anyway, to the shops!

i'll have to agree with some of the others, i've heard nothing bad about animal crossing, mario kart and new super mario bros.

final fantasy 3 is coming out sometime too.

Castlevania: Dawn of Sorrow is my favorite modern platformer. It combines RPG elements with jumping around in 2D. It's fantastic.

I'm really looking forward to the new Zelda game, and Final Fantasy 3.

No, I haven't gotten it either, but I have heard that its tons of fun and rather different from your typical Mario game (but in a good way). I wish you could rent these carts because I would be having a field day!

I have the following:

Super Mario 64 DS
Some cool twists in a superb classic that I can't get enough of (such as playing as Yoshi, Wario, Luigi and more stars to get - mini-games)

Kirby's Canvas Curse
Unique style of control, just the stylus is used to paint kirby little paths to follow. I like it but in small doses. I pick it up, beat a level and set it down. I'll probably sell this one when I beat it

Mario & Luigi: Partners in Time
If you like RPGs and ESPECIALLY if you liked Super Mario RPG I say get this one. This game uses timed hits to no end. It really adds to the battle when they all but require you to have your timing down to do well. It's not hard which is a slight disappointment and I hear it's short. I'm 7 hours in right now and have 2 of the 5 cobalt star shards. Ooh, I also find the faux-italian Mario and Luigi speak to be pretty funny :p

Animal Crossing: Wild World
It seems like it's a game for kids but it's a lot of fun. I've been playing nothing but this game since I got it a couple days ago. The idea is very simple, you arrive in a town with pretty much nothing, the shop keeper (an animal - as with the rest of the town) gives you a house and then tells you that you owe him like around $550,000 bells (the game's currency). You can do all kinds of odd-jobs to start paying it down but there's no rush. You can just simply sell fruit from trees, bugs you catch, fish you catch, things you might find and more. I think there's a LOT more to it because I've only played for a few days and I'm just getting into it. The day after I played the first time they added a few new elements like house customization and a little rating associated with that, new items were shipped to the shop, etc. Things in the game follow your DS clock (although my Animal Crossing world is somehow 2 hours ahead of my DS clock...) and there's even little events that will occur in the world. One of the habitants of "Zaptown" (my town's name - didn't name it myself) is a bald eagle and has his birthday party on July 4th :p So we'll see how that goes. I guess there's fishing tournaments that pop up and I think there's other competitions and mini-games too.

New Super Mario Bros. is my favorite game on the system so far. Metroid Prime Hunters is really fun online once you get the hang of it. Mario Kart is very fun online and offline as well, can't go wrong with it. Advance Wars Dual Strike is an awsome turn based game. DS lineup is pretty good right now so you shouldn't have trouble finding a good game.

New Super MArio Brothers
Meteos
Animal Crossing
Pac Pix
Metorid
Tetris

These are the ones I'll be taking on holiday with me over the summer. Even though I've had Pac Pix for over a year (I purchased it in time for last year's holiday actually) it's really addictive. A lost classic. :(

Oh, also look into the GBA Movie Player so you can have music, movies, and NES games on the go too--all in one handy cartridge!

Find it for cheap here.

There's also a big flashing community out there I think I'll invest in. It's a bit more expensive (~$100 for all the equipment) but then you can play DS backups and other emulators as well (snes on the go anyone? :D).

Yeah, I really want to do that too since the ScummVM is something I am having trouble living without, esp. when I know there are people out there enjoying it one their DS!! Just gotta bite the bullet and lay down the cash....

Right now I have Mario Kart, Castlevania, and Metroid. I recommend all if you are fans of the genres, especially Mario Kart, it's a must have.

I suppose you know most of the good games available now so i'll list some upcoming games to look out for:

Star Fox Command - August 28, 2006 - Seems to be a return to the N64 days of star fox, hopefully it's just as good.

Final Fantasy III - September 12, 2006 - A 3D remake of the only Final Fantasy game never to be released outside of Japan.

Contact - September 12, 2006 - Very Earthbound-esque RPG ( If you haven't played Earthbound I hate you), It's being made by the same team that made Killer 7.

Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass - TBA 2006 - A sequel to the Wind Waker, same graphical style, Link is completely controlled using the touch screen.

Other games to look out for: Mario Hoops 3 on 3, Lunar Knights, Children of Mana, Tales of Tempest(even though i despised Tales of Symphonia), Castlevania: Portrait of Ruin.

There's a new Yoshi's Island too :)

Tales of Tempest mentioned above reminded me that the new installment in the series is called Tales of Quiz. Riighhtt.

Heh, I'll definitely need a new game soon, I can only endure Metroid for a ½ hour at a time. Trying to move, aim and shoot can be quite stressful on the little interface.

Getting through it though...

Anything more serious coming out for DS soon? Not that I dislike those games - far from it - but I'd like to see something funky and cool that comes out for DS. Or just something totally weird, like Loco Roco. Man, that thing's weird.

There's plenty of funky, cool (in a crazy Japanese kind of way) and weird on the DS - it' the daddy in this respect - but not alot of serious. Much of it you'll have to import, but that's always been the case with Nintendo consoles.

Pheonix Wright - Ace Attorney

How can this game be so compelling???? Seriously, I was glued to my DS while playing. o_O And before I knew it I had completed it :(

Picked up MarioKart yesterday.

Was a little pissed after the footie, so I only had a chance to play one GP. It's bloody good though. :O

If you're a huge strategy guy like me, you should get Age of Empires: Age of Kings for the DS. It's a lot like Advanced Wars, only without the goofy, kiddy, pokemon-esque style. It honest to God feels like playing the PC version, only turn based.
