My friend lent me a dirty movie on DVD, and I figured I'd rip it in case I ever want to feel filthy inside.

So I try to burn it and my software kept saying insert a DL disc. So then I realized that I needed Dual Layer discs.

Finally found some at a not so bad price in town. 15 DL discs for $20.

So I try to burn the movie and it didn't work. Thats when I realized my DVD burner - being about 1 year old OEM emachines, possibly can't burn DL discs.

So, I'm like shit. I'm afraid to waste more money. I'd be better off spending $25 for a recent burner. Besides, I've got the Antec 900 and my silver DVD drive doesn't match right. A black dVD drive would look righteous.

Anyone know if an OEM DVD burner from a year ago should burn DL discs or not? I guess it never occurred to me that it wouldn't. It also didn't occur to me that DL discs would be holding onto their price still, seeing as I can get like 50 SL DVD's for like $8 on sale. I was shocked when I went into Circuit Shitty and saw 5 DL discs for $15. Office Max FTW.

Just knowing it's OEM it's hard to say--maybe, maybe not. Have you looked up the drive's model in the device manager and googled it?

It is very possible that your burner doesn't support Dual layer, I don't think it's a burnable format that became a must-have.

Most recent burners will (even cheap ones) but it isn't something I would guarantee so do a little research if you want to buy a new burner.

The alternative is to compress the movie (you filthy bugger ;) ). If you only need it to play on the computer make it an AVI (do some googles to find out how, might be a bit of learning). Otherwise you can make the compressed version DVD player playable by using something like DVDFab.
