use a realistic background color, it's much easier on the eyes and your sense of lighting and shadow will be more sane.
I havent used corel painter though ive seen some very impressive work come out from it. your work is cool but it's in a damn rough state, all the lines are too blurry. spend a few hours more on the next painting you make refining the shapes and edges.
