Police will allege the accused man, who has been in Australia for eight months on a working visa, met the sex worker, who is living as a woman, in the Murray St mall at 1pm on Thursday.

During the afternoon, they exchanged text messages and arranged to meet at the Esplanade Hotel later that night where they allegedly had consensual sex.

East Perth Magistrate's Court yesterday heard that Mr Hodnett, a nurse's assistant and carer, became upset and angry when he became aware the 24-year-old prostitute was previously a male and stole her handbag, which was worth $4500 and contained $1600 cash. He then fled the hotel.

The court heard that shortly afterwards, Mr Hodnett sent threatening SMS text messages to the sex worker's mobile phone, demanding $100,000 or he would discard her handbag, which contained her Indonesian passport and bank documents.

She then did the smart thing and called the police. Perhaps he thought prostitution was illegal and she wouldn't want to go to the cops? Dumbass.

Apparently he has a girlfriend over here who was just about to move over to Australia to live with him. She dodged a bullet there!

holy shit tranny hookers own $4500 handbags? I'm in the wrong business <breaks out pruning shears>

So I take it he couldn't tell he/she was a transsexual when he met him/her, and somehow found out later?

I guess when making one of those deals a "whole model preview" would have to be made first

a simple adams apple check would have been enough

well the rule is if it looks like a pat then it's best to check all angles to make sure. that said I've never seen a convincing tranny ..not that I go looking for them

It you ever saw a convincing one you wouldn't know.

there's always telltale signs. also we're talking about pre-op transvestite not transgender

Riom leave Stern alone, if he wants to be a self-proclaimed expert on transvestites, let him. He obviously has enough experience with them.

A prostitute from SE Asia? I don't know how anyone could expect anything other than a ladyboy in that situation. That's like going to Canada and being surprised there's snow on the ground.

It you ever saw a convincing one you wouldn't know.

Don't worry, Stern's never wrong and that also applies to never missing a tranny when he sees one, even ones that are too convincing to be noticed.

I'm more concerned that prostitution is legal.

Also transvestites.

Why are you concerned. It lessens the need for an underground society centering around it which should reduce crime.

From what I gather it actually enables organized crime a source of income as well as creating a demand for women to kidnap or threaten into prostitution which is harder to escape.

Try searching for that aussie guy who died trying to save hia girlfriend who was in debt and was forcibly taken to a brothel of sorts in Austrailia.

What you describe sounds completely illegal, and would not be legalized with legalized prostitution. That's called kidnapping and indentured servitude which I'm pretty sure is even illegal in Australia. Legalized prostitution doesn't validate victimization of women.

Raz has a point, if it's legal then it's easy to audit a place for mistreatment/diseases/etc. Instead of allowing it to fester unseen, prostitution that is legal makes it impossible to turn a profit on the criminal brothels, because they are more expensive to operate than a legal one would be.

You guys understand that even legal companies engage in illegal activities sometime? Organized crime has a way of using legal institutions to fund illegal things.

Then nothing should be legal.

PROB SOLVED. UR WELCOME, WORLD.

Prostitution is illegal in Ireland, and yet this country is notorious for sex trafficking. Possible victims of sex trafficking are then sometimes prosecuted themselves for "breaking the law" even though it may not have been voluntary for them. If it were possible to legalize prostitution on the condition that the person selling themselves takes 100% of the profit, then I guess I would be for that. But people are dickheads and break the law anyway.

ya so? that's true of pretty much any industry. also health and safety regulations do not apply to illegal operations. by making it legal you'd have to ensure adherence to health and safety regulations or face shut down

So that results in two things;

1. Legal prostitution operations

2. Illegal prostitution operations

Now obviously you might think that legal prostitution will now be more prevalent than illegal ones. By illegal I mean those that don't apply to regulations, as well as those that pretend to do, but are in reality modern slavery.

First, I'm going to hazard a guess and say that most women might not want to prostitute themselves on the basis of social views and it being somewhat demeaning. So that's the Supply curve for the legal prostitution operations going down. And lets assume that there are a fixed number of undesirables that pay for sex. Obviously excess demand has to go over to illegal operations.

Secondly, who has the capital of already-established brothels and whatnot? Same with the gambling industry: organized crime. It's going to be hard for independent pimps to set up shop without facing harsh competition, and perhaps since mafia type folks don't take kindly to having competition, being thrown in the river whilst gagged and tied to a slab of concrete does not good business make.

Third, Ok, that might be true (or it might not be, really), but why does that make brothels run by organized crime illegal? Not at first, no. But they will have excess demand and not enough supply, and like good businessmen they go and find some more in the form of the mentally handicapped or those that owe them money, illegal immigrants , etc. And of course (especially illegal aliens), to cut costs they don't actually follow government regulations. Inspectors can be bribed, at any rate.

Four. Government will of course try and regulate them; it's what governments love doing and do best. Unfortunately, if they can't find a carcinogen hidden in the main ingredient of a junk food brand for nearly 8 years, I think it's safe to say they won't be able to find every unregistered brothel there is. Which reminds me; if you pretend to not be a brothel, the police will have a hard time getting to you, and this is actually what they do now.

Also I have arguments about how its wrong to demean women by making a human being a product and a service for rent, and how the poor and marginalized will be the only ones prostituting themselves in the name of the State, and general conservative morality, but I don't think you guys would care about things like that, so this is where my post ends. :D

Ah, but numbers if you legalise prostitution you can then tax it, providing more money for the government of the glorious motherland to lavish on the armed forces!

Am I really going to be the first to mention Thailand?

While that actually is an enticing suggestion, a motherland that requires tax on prostitution to fund its armed forces doesn't seem all that glorious.

But in any case,

The first graph assumes the model of prostitutes that respond to money (meaning that they have no self-respect)

Tax revenue would be blue. Now, the you understand that there is now more of an incentive for both the undesirables and the brothel runners to seek unregulated (and also untaxed) prostitution. Black refers to their loss of utility, which has been vaporized by the tax.

The second graph assumes the model in which I talked about above; most women have a sense of dignity and refuse to stoop to prostitution, causing a fixed supply. The tax gathers very little revenue, but absolutely destroys the brothel's income, halving it. The brothel now has an incentive to turn to illegal prostitution, and also to get more supply, perhaps from illegal immigrants or orphans. Also, there is now a supply of prostitutes that are now without customers.

Now this is simply an extension of my above-mentioned argument, simply with tax added. Therefore, the conclusion is:
1. Tax does not generate more than superficial revenue.
2. Tax gives yet another incentive for both the undesirables and the brothels (and the unemployed prostitutes) turn to illegal means.

The first graph assumes the model of prostitutes that respond to money (meaning that they have no self-respect)

That's kind of a massive sweeping generalization. How do you deduce that prostitutes who respond to money have no self respect?

I was simply trying to state that the Supply of prostitutes is highly skewed and insensitive to marginal propensity.

Seriously though that shouldnt matter as its only there because I understand that there is a grey zone.

[from illegal immigrants or orphans]

Aside from the insensitive, ridiculous catechisms you might subscribe to regarding sex work, you are also ascribing an unrealistically rigid and self-maintaining market system to something that is, in the real world, very fragmented, both symbolically and physically.

I dont like to see prostitutes due to the fact that is probable that they are resorting to that cuz they dont have other way,or worse, they can be doing it due to ilegal reason like trafficking and such,so bringing some legality to it will be better for the girls cuz that way they will have some resource to appeal to instead of hiding form the law

especially whit cases like people forced to do it

you should differentiate between street walkers and escorts. escorts are almost always self employed and out of choice

As big a douche as KA is, he's the primary source of actual reason in this thread. :|

He's also the primary source of large words in this thread.

He does take advantage of his rather collegiate English vocabulary, yeah. It's part of his occasionally endearing douchetitude.
