I am a ok modeler in 3d studio max. Im wanting to make a mod for halflife 2 called Duke Nukem : Blast From the Past! Im not sure how copyrights go, but as long as i make my own textures and stuff and not makeing money off it am i able to make this mod? I would really love to recreate the 3d realms duke nukem 3d for the half life 2 engine.

Just think all of us that have waited what is it now 8-10 years for the duke to hit the screen again. I think the hardest part wont be the codeing i mean just adding some sound files and the weapons from the original 3d duke and makeing a few monster models wont be tuff...... its the maps that im fearing the most.....

I know this is just a idea im tossing around i dont have the resources currently to produce this but i do have some friends that might be able to help me pull it off.....

To tell you the truth id be happy just replaying the maps:)

What do you guys think?

yea why not.

by the time hl2 is out, and you have finished modding duke nukem, then the duke nukem forever will have a release date.

Don't bother, they'd use legal action to stop you since it'd compete with DNF.

If you want to make a DN mod, better do it on the DNF game when it (someday) comes out.

My guess, copyrights will ruin it. Especially from a game so popular as Duke Nukem.

It would be cool to see one though :)

Btw, the reason for copyright issues is just "Duke Nukem". Its his name, its the game name, its the series name, etc... Its too obvious.

Sure, the copyrights keep you from doing so, but it depends on whether 3D Realms will take action or see this as a fan who tributes their work.

With 90% probability, they will. If it was a mod for DNF (lol :)) it wouldnt be an issue, as copyrights doesnt apply then in the same sense, just as making a HL2 copy (ie Gordon goes to Russia to fight resurrected communist Striders and takes Alyx with him or whatever) for HL2 wouldnt be much problem. But making a DN mod for HL2 is another deal. Its a rival company, its a rival engine, and its a rival game. Like making a Quake 3 mod on UT2k3, calling it Quake 3 Tournament. Or modding a Dark Forces game on Source, its the same thing. You cant call it "Dark Forces: Jedi Wars" or whatever. One can most likely make it (with a small chance of getting into trouble from Lucasarts), but calling it that would make it a sure close.

Edit: This of course assume the mod is *slightly* good and gets noticed. If there's one player playing it, hope its not George Lucas or John Carmack or the likes ;)
