During the turret battle in nova prospekt the turrets attack me instead of the enemy

I got to the part in nova prospekt where there are two turrets that Alex says can help me fight against incoming enemies. The problem is that when I set up these turrets they attack me when I come into their line of sight but they won't attack the incoming combine!

I've tried to search for solutions to this problem, and in Google I can see several posts where other people have had the same problem, but I have yet to see anyone come up with a solution. Is this a bug in the game, and if so is there a way to fix it?

The best solution I can offer is loading an earlier save game (from at least one map prior to the one you're on) and trying again from there.

Failing that, go to Steam and right click on Half-Life 2 and click properties. Then go to the local content tab and click the "verify integrity of game cache."
