So I got my new DVD drive in the mail today, after my old one decided it didn't want to work anymore; I installed it, and booted up my computer to find that both my DVD and CD-RW drives don't show up.

However, when I disconnected the DVD drives IDE cable, the CD-RW showed up, and vice versa the DVD drive showed up when I disconnected the CD-RW drive. So they both work, but for some reason cancel each other out when they're both plugged in.

I remember having an issue like this about a year ago, but I have no idea how I fixed it.

Any suggestions?

You need to set one drive as slave and another one as master. Look in the back of the drives and you should see a sticker or something and some pins. There will be a small plastic rectangle covering 2 pins there, you need to look at the sticker that tells you how to make the drive slave/master and do so for each respective drive. IE: Place the jumper (plastic thingie) as shown in the diagrams.

Make sure you connect both drives to the same cable. Master drive should go at the end of your IDE cable, slave drive should go into the middle.

Yup it was the jumpers, both were set to master.

Thanks for the help.

he asked for suggestions. i gave him one. it was exactly what his problem was. i was not nasty or anything - only helpful. get over yourself. why do you kiddies insist on turning things into flame-wars and arguments?

I think I can see where he came from with that; I too saw your "learn about jumper settings." as sarcasm.
You could be more specific next time for there are many jumpers. ;)

i wasnt being sarcastic. i totally pointed him in the right direction, and a monkey could have solved it from there with no further help from this thread.
