I hope someone recognises this problem and saves me about €200
My DVD drive is a Sony dw-r56a with DVD-RW and 8* speed
It no longer reads anything put in it be it a DVD, CD or toast - the disc will spin loudly and then slow down and repeat the process constantly
Accessing the DVD drive through explorer causes the explorer window to hang which ends when I eject the disc

Troubleshooting completed thus far
- AVG and AS up to date
- Downloaded latest drivers, roll backed latest drivers, reinstalled latest drivers
- Cleaned the DVD drive itself checking for damage to the pins and laser
- Typed regedit into run to see if starforce was on my computer
- Checked the Device Manager for conflicts or problems

My guess is it may be physical damage to either my laptop or the DVD drive itself although I would love if someone has a good idea as to fixing it...

Try a different IDE cable and check the jumpers.

the thread title is so misleading. i thought a magnificent new invention hit the market ending the life of dvd players. alas i was mistaken.

You should check your connections( IDE cables and such) for starters. And see iff anything is lodged in there, because I had the same problem, And I swear this on the bible.....I found a cough drop inside my cd drive
