on my other computer my dvd drive is acting real funny

the drive is a dvd rw and cd rw burnerand reads cd and dvd

but the problem is it wont burn cds, but burns dvds ( probably because i am buying the wrong blank cds with the wrong speeds, but burns dvd r and rw perfectly fine)

one of the big problem is that it wont read cd's anymore and i am trying to format using my windows xp cd but it wont read it, it also cant read gmes anymore :(

but plays dvds perfectly fine...anyone have any idea what the problem is?

Hi there!

Well not to many replies to this pertinent question; I had the same problem though posted a question about it at xbitlabs forums and got help, though nothing concrete.

I have a NEC 1100 DVD_RW drive that basically has given up on reading data cds.

It reads music cds fine, and rips them fine. DVDs are good too.

It al seemed to start when I began adding a new hard disc to the computer; perhaps unplugging it and letting whatever electronics inside it discharge began this episode (it DOES happen; have a Sky digibox from Grundig; was fine until we began switching it off at the wal for holidays and the like. They used some crappy capacitors that didn't likethis and over time lost their charge, affecting of all things the signal strength of the incoming satellite signal!).

Anyway, thankfully have another DVD-ROM drive that seems unaffected. And yes I too did the SFC "test" to see if it would read a CD relialy. It fails it, though with a format of my computer (NVidia IDe and audio drivers were f-ed up as were ASPI layer and access to the drives for audio) it's not helped (gets 20% and then asks for the CD...WHICH IS IN THE DRIVE!). Mind you when I was monkeying around with utting the drive on different master/slave positions.channels it asked ofr it immediately! Probably due to the drivers though and some other hidden problem.

I was suspecting my PSU but that seems to have acquitted itself..but I may be gettng a flat CMOS battery (if that has ANYTHING to do with CD reaing ability I will eat my hat/coaster CD-RW I made before the format!).
