I'm glad Valave is releasing a DVD version of HL2. Very good call I reckon.

Would be very interesting to see the sales of the DVD vs normal CD.

DVD sales did just recently beat out VHS sales in the video market. How that pertains to this, well, it doesn't.

But I will buy the DVD version if I can get it, platinum.

Yeah, I hate switching CDs, and it appears a game cant be succesfull on just one CD anymore :)

Great And i Got no DVD player. If i count correctly I'll have enough money in two months to buy hl2. Hopefully the'll bring out a CD version as well.

Even though I'd buy a DVD player just for hl2.

DVD drive for pc are like 40 bucks, go get one!

I will also get the dvd version.

My HP from 1999 had a CD-RW and DVD-ROM. Welcome to the year 2000.

Same here. Untill now I haven't had the need to buy a DVD player for my computer when I have a DVD player and a 32" Sony Wega TV about 10 feet from my computer. I would run out and buy one for this game, but my girlfriend and I don't have a lot of loot (probably because we buy stuff like 32" TVs).

There will be both a CD and DVD version. Was announced by Gabe in the Official Q&A thread on this board.

ok well im going to have to steal the DVD-ROM out of my dads computer ... he dosent use it ANYWAYS ... :)

Half-Life 2 won't have any in-game movies, so I think CD switching is only an issue during install, which really isn't a big deal.

Is it true that the computer reads DVD's faster than CD's? If that's true the loading times and starting the game will go faster...

what is the difference between a CD and DVD for a game. I don't know anything about computers, at all!

1. Yes I believe DVD's are read quicker.

2. If it's anything like HL1, the load times won't be affected by the speed of the drive, since it's handled by your other hardware instead (you can play HL and it's mods without the CD, and there is no difference in loading times).

Just the amount of information you can get on each format. If HL2 fills up 4 CD's then instead of having to swop 4 CD's during install (Unlikely you would need to at all in the game) then you can buy (If you have a DVD drive in your PC) the DVD version which will be just the 1 disk. Personally I will go for the DVD version and help the industry move from CD to DVD (Plus enable me to set the install going and disappear for 10 mins rather than sit there changing CD's every 3 mins) :)

Erm, is there any reason at all that the DVD version would be superior to the CD version? That's the vibe I'm getting from you guys but I wouldn't have have thought there would be...

I suppose it might install faster.

I was thinking maybe the collectors edition would be the DVD, and they can then put loads and loads of DVD footage and stuff on the DVD too. :)

I don't have a DVD player on my computer, as I think it's somewhat pointless, and I'm getting pretty concerned. If I play it on a CD, will I have longer load times after I've installed the game? Will I not have acess to the special edition's extra media? Will I miss out on anything except for the initial install time? Thanks guys.

Most likely, the DVD version will be a limited release. There have been DVD versions of games released in the past, but the ratio was usually 20:1 in favor of CD-ROM. In fact, you might even have to specifically order it from your local software shop to make sure you get a DVD version.

Now here's the real question: will the collector's edition be a DVD exclusive?

Yeah, that's one of my main questions too. Actually, I suppose I will pick up a DVD drive solely for Half Life. Is fourty bucks about a good price for one?

Looks like I will now be spending money to get myself a DVD player for my comp. I know it would be the exact same on CD but I have been wanting games to switch to DVD for a long time and I will support any company that wants to start the switch. So ill buy the DVD version.

I don't have one myself, and while you technically can get one for $40, the question should be can you get a good one for that little. I've seen DVD-ROM drives for at little as $29.99, but it's usually some cheap ass brand like "Hi-Val" or something lame like that. The name brand components like Pioneer, Sony, or Acer are usually considerably more.

yeah i think it is a great think for the market that they release games on DVD. So we dotn have to change cd´s all the time its kinda enoying.

Well, if there is absoulutely no difference except for changing CD's during installation, I'll stick with the CD version. If there are less load times or something, time to buy a DVD drive.

But the point is, we don't have to "change cd's all the time," just during installation. Once the game is installed, you shelve all the other CD's and just use the play disc. It's really not that big of deal.

Now if the collector's edition is a DVD exclussive, I may finally get a DVD-ROM drive, but since money is pretty tight at the moment, I most likely won't. And since I'm going to do a full install anyway, load times will be identical.

Clearly the whole IT industry is turning to DVD? Why?

1) DVD Burners are cheaper

2) DVD-R's are cheaper

3) More software is being released on 3-4 CD's these days. Will be alot more 'neater' and now days cheaper to just throw it on a single DVD.

Basically to get yourself a DVD-Rom it's very very cheap. There is no great excuse.

I remember when the first Command & Conquer came out on CD only and I didn't have a CD-ROM yet. I went out and brought one.

The same scenerio will happen with DVD's. Game companies will start to make games that require 5 CD's and they are like 'stuff it' and just put it on DVD ONLY.

If Diablo 3 (whenever it comes out) is a 5 cd game but they choose to only put it on DVD everyone would buy a DVD-Rom then.

The problem with transfering from CD-Rom to DVD will be solved with a few big titles being released on DVD only. You watch.

You mean you can get a low quality one for cheap. What about a good one? I don't like having to replace my drives every six months.

Pioneer is always a safe bet. Since they created the whole DVD thing ;)

Pay a little bit more for Pioneer but hey it's a good brand. I had mine pioneer for ages and they were one of the first ones they brought out for PC...

i got a combo cd-Burner/DVD its a samsung and im very pleased with it. :bounce:

I got a Sony 16x DVD-ROM and a Sony DRU-500A Multiformat burner (CD-R/RW,DVD-R/RW, DVD+R/RW) They both rock.

Lite-On produces reasonably prices DVD/DVD combo drives and they are of suprisingly good value. Lite-On's have always includd the most recent technologies and capabilities (and have replaced Plextor as my optical drives of choice)

If you're looking for a plain DVD-ROM I'd suggest:
LiteOn 16x (40x cd rom) DVD-ROM (approx $45)
or if combo:
LiteOn 48x24x48x/16x CD-RW/DVD-ROM Combo Drive (approx $72)

ive got a DVD rom in my old 500mhz rig, woulde it really be worth it to bring it over to my new comp, its only 4X dvd.

load times will -not- be affected by wheter you have cd/dvd.
load times are affected by your cpu and mainly your hd
