dvd shiznit

Just got one of those hd/dvd recorders and tested a recorded disc on my computer but when wmp tries to play it, it stops responding
The player can play it back fine.
Also any recommendations on a program to convert the vob file to avi/mpeg?
I really need answers asap.

VOB is just a folder structure for Mpeg2/Audio and Subtitles together on the DVD.
Personally, I use CladDVD to extract the streams I want and then DVD2AVI to convert the streams to whatever.

Thank you. Checking it out now...
Well, claddvd said it wasnt installed properly when i extracted and ran it. Dvd2avi crashed when it was rendering the avi.
I hope i didnt just waste £200
