Nausicaä
Whisper of the Heart
Princess Mononoke

Monoke:Plot Outline: On a journey to find the cure for a Tatarigami's curse, Ashitaka finds himself in the middle of a war between the forest and Tataraba, a mining colony. In this quest he also meets San, the Mononoke Hime.
Plot Synopsis: A prince is infected with an incurable disease by a possessed boar/god. He is to die unless he can find a cure to rid the curse from his body. It seems that his only hope is to travel to the far east. When he arrives to get help from the deer god, he finds himself in the middle of a battle between the animal inhabitants of the forest and an iron mining town that is exploiting and killing the forest. Leading the forest animals in the battle is a human raised by wolves, Princess Mononoko

Whispers of the Heart:Plot Synopsis: A young girl finds that all the books she chooses in the library have been previously checked out by the same boy. Later she meets a very infuriating fellow... could it be her "friend" from the library? The boy's grandfather has a violin sales and service shop. The boy wants to be a violin maker like his grandfather.

NAUSICAÄ :Plot Outline: Warrior/pacifist Princess Nausicaä desperately struggles to prevent two warring nations from destroying themselves and their dying planet.
Plot Synopsis: In the far future, man has destroyed the Earth in the "Seven Days of Fire". Now, there are small pockets of humanity that survive. One pocket is the Valley of Wind where a princess named Nausicaa tries to understand, rather than destroy the Toxic Jungle. Note that the old US release titled Warriors of the Wind is an entirely kiddified version which edits the original movie heavily, thus creating an entirely different story. -Andre

I'd say Kiki's Delivery Service or Grave of the Fireflies. Depending on whether I want to be hit with the Cute Fluffy Mallet or the Bludgeoning Axe of Death and Depression.

So it's usually Kiki's.

Can't say Nausicaa really does it for me. Main reason being the Manga is so incredible. It's disappointing to watch an epic being stripped down to it's bare-essentials and hideously deformed. In many ways, it's simply a cash in. Though as far as cash-ins go, I can't really take issue with it. It's simple. No Nausicaa movie, no Ghibli. I just wish that Ghibli would revist the property, and give it the trilogy it deserves :P

And keeping it all consistantly related, the next DVDs on my wish-list?

Howl's Moving Castle (early March)
My Neighbour Totoro (late March)
My Neighbours the Yamadas (April)
Whisper of the Heart (April)
Only Yesterday (May)

As they're releasing over the next four/five months in the UK. Porco Rosso and Pom Poko in the post \o/ . Also want to pick up the dirt-cheap GitS Stand Alone Complex 1st Gig Boxset (i'm not actually a fan of GitS, but... but the price!). And the last two volumes of Paranoia Agent. Because Satoshi Kon is the best thing since... umm... Hayao Miyazaki?

Edit: Have you seen Mononoke before? I adore that film.

Serenity

Captain Malcolm Reynolds, a hardened veteran (on the losing side) of a galactic civil war, now eeks out a living aboard his ship, Serenity. He leads a small, eclectic crew, but when Mal takes on two new passengers – a young doctor and his telepathic sister – he gets much more than he bargained for. The pair are fugitives from the coalition dominating the universe, and so Serenity finds itself caught between the unstoppable military force of the Alliance, the horrific, cannibalistic fury of the Reavers – and another danger lurking at the very heart of the spaceship…

Yeah, I must get my hands on the manga. Having not read it certainly helps make the movie more impressive I guess because I really loved it. Terribly moving.

Yup and it is an awesome film as well. Definitely near the top of my list, along with Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.
