DVDROM drive vs. mounted disk image

I'll be getting HL2 in a few days and was wondering what people's experiences were with making a disk image of their HL2 DVD and mounting it on a stealth drive, generally i've experienced faster access with the mouted image but thats on my laptop with a 5400rpm HDD and an 8x DVD drive, my desktop will be on a 7200rpm HDD and a 16x DVD drive, will i be able to run the game faster from the image or the optical drive. it should be faster if it's on a seperate drive to hl2/steam. but i think there was a steam updae that took away cd checks. so you won't need the cd anymore.
