How long till cards video cards support dx 10,best guess? If a card supports dx 9 will a driver update allow the card to support dx 10? Is dx 10 a must to run windows vista or will you just be missing some eye candy?

DX10 cards will be available sometime in the first half of 2007 is my guess.

No is my guess.

There is no real difference between DX9 Vista and DX10 Vista......is my guess.

i think some features use dx10 but aero glass will only require dx9 and there cant be a driver to force a certain direct x you will need the hardware

DX9 is required especially for Aero glass in Vista. DX10 will have new features for game graphics. You need a DX10 card, no drivers nor flashing of a bios with a DX9 card will help you here. And of course you will have to wait for Vista before you can use DX10.

Could Windows XP use DX10 if drivers or something were released for it?

I believe ATI already unveiled their newest card to hit the market later:

No word from nVidia yet though. Right now, Vista (BETA 2 build 5384) already has DirectX 10 (at least according to my dxdiag), and as I'm running on a DX9 card with Aero there's no real difference. There aren't any real DX10 features in the basic Windows desktop, just some transparency effects.

And you need DX10 for that? :|

No, not at all.

Consider what I said as two seperate thoughts. There aren't any real DX10 features in the basic Windows desktop because the only "special effect" that Vista has is some transparency effects.

Hope that reads a bit better for you.

Vista Dx10, no Dx10 for XP,
Cards with DX10 is set to release between Jan 2007- March of the same year.

Games such as Crysis is the first game with DX10, you can view the video of DX10 at ign,

What's the reason for no DX10 on XP? (Other than for them to force us to upgrade)

most people will buy vista for DX10 alone................thats why no XP dx 10

expecting all new tech/apps to continue running in your beloved xp is ignorant, stop being so cynical.

DX10 is such a huge rewrite that it would be impossible to just upgrade a graphics cards drivers or BIOS to make it Dx10.

For not releasing it on XP? Well what would be the point? Your still going to have to upgrade to a DX10 Graphics Card. Not only that but Vista has been designed to unload all System Resources and such to be a very nice Gaming OS. Im also sure that XP would have to have plenty of things upgraded in order to get DX10 to even work on it. I'm sure DX10 has it's roots Dug down into Vista quite far.

Now for Vista. To run Vista you will need a DX9 graphics card. The graphics card will also need Vista Compatible Drivers. In order to play DX10 games you will need a DX10 graphics card. Vista fully supports DX9 and DX10. What it does not support is this:
DX9 or lower calls from DX10. In other words, games that you see coming out that support both DX9 and DX10 have 2 completely different rendering systems. They basically coded the entire rendering side twice, one for Dx9 and one for DX10. This is to speed DX10 up and because DX10 is so much different you can't mix and match DX9 and DX10 calls.

Plus Microsoft hasn't come out with a major OS In what 5/6 years? Don't expect all your programs to run forever. I mean when Apple moved to OSX, plenty of things didn't run perfectly on them.

^ exactly what i'm getting at.

lol @ macos 9 to macos x reference.. those were some dark days.

I'm planning on upgrading when Vista comes out and buying one of the best DX10 cards out there.

Anyone know if they are going to release an AGP ATi R600?

My guess is that you need to do research :)

My guess is they will coincide with Vista's release

I wish enough people would boycott Vista so M$ would be forced to implement it to XP though, seriously, they're being shameless. Usually when new operational systems released, we'd be able to play them on older OS:es with no problem, but now we're FORCED to switch as if Vista is obligatory. I'm really pissed at M$ as of late. :|
