Um ... doesn't mean a thing as far as Crysis is concerned. The game runs on DX9, so that really wasn't what was holding them up.

That will only mean the software part of DX10, if I understand correctly. That still is not going to be the same as a real DX10-level video card. Moreover, it's been said that Crysis can run on your regular DX9, as well.

Crysis is DX10, no? I thought DX9 cards just emulated DX10.

Uh... Crysis is as much DX10 as HL2 is DX9. Crysis takes advantage of DX10 features, which means that it will run in its full visual glory on DX10 level video cards (none of which are currently available).

If you install DirectX10, while having a DX9 level card, such as any of the currently best cards, you'll get DX10 software features with DX9 hardware features. The specific details depend on the situation, but the DX10 specific features will not then be used, and probably simplified rendering procedures will be used.

It would be like running hl2 on a DX8 card that is good.....like playing HL2 on an FX5900 ultra.....it will run okay and look nice.....but not nearly as nice as say playing hl2 on an 7900gtx or ATI X1900XT.....

You're not accurate, technically ;). The FX series is DirectX9 in its entirety, and while the earlier cards suck at it, the later don't as much. FX5900 Ultra should run HL2 in DX9 mode fine, and an equivalent ATI card definitely would. The 7xxx series wasn't even out back then, so there's no way HL2 requires a 7xxx series card to be ran in full beauty.

BTW, I only played HL2 in DX8 so far, and that looks pretty damn nice enough :).

It's still unclear what will DirectX10 add to Crysis, probably more elements in a sceene, like more leafs and more rocks on the ground - without any performance hit. Perhaps more physical interactions that will enable more trees to break and fall at once after a grenade explosion.

No DirectX10 footage was shown yet.

Who gives a shit about Crysis? If this update does come to fruition, will it have any effect on existing titles? Or just titles that chose to take advantage of it?

Yeh thats the sortof questions people should be asking.

Anyway I don't know where people get the idea that Crysis wasn't going to be on consoles because consoles can't support it. Cevat Yerli clearly stated it's because they want to show what the PC is presently capable of, by concentrating on the PC version.

Crysis has 2 renderers.
A Dx9 and a Dx10.

Vista fully supports both Dx9 and Dx10.

The ATI card does not have full hardware support for Dx10. It has support for some\many of Dx10 features. Microsoft has surely done a lot to make it possible to port both Dx10 and Dx9 games between Vista\Xp and Xbox 360. Even more when they get XNA done. So there is a good chance to see this game go to the 360.

This has just been proven not to be the case:

Xbox 360 Not Upgradable to DirectX 10
...none of this is true, according to ATI themselves. "Xbox360 cannot run DX10, and confirmed what I said earlier about the extended functionality. The Xbox360 has unique features including memory export that can enable DX10-class functionality such as stream-out," said an ATI spokesperson. "From what we're hearing, Crysis will support DX9 with some sort of use for DX10 features. It's likely that those DX10 visuals can be replicated on the Xbox360, but it can't be properly called DX10."

And in Crysis port news:
Crytek has had to continually deny they'll be porting their highly anticipated sci-fi shooter Crysis onto Xbox 360 once development on the PC version is completed early next year.

Oh well. I am sure a spin-off will be in the works somehow....
