DX9 Command and back stepping

Ok question.... If you put HL2 into DX9 and it sux... Do u need another command to put it back to 8.1? Or is it in the Video options? Like I'm gunna try with my PCI 5900 and if the framrate sucks can I put it back to normal 8.1 easily? Thx!
