It seems to me that a lot of current gaming info points to the following conclusion: ATI=DX9=HL2 while Nvidia=OpenGL=D3

While I realize that everything works with everything else just fine most of the time, it seems that some combinations, mainly the ones listed above are almost married to each other from the get go and have a legitimate performance advantage. Is there a technical reason for this? or are we talking about hardware / software legacy issues that date back 10+ years?
or is it just a case of the financial "buddy system" to make sure that everyone says afloat? I am not judging or pointing fingers, I am just curious
as how we got to this point in time where it's come down to: Team X vs Team Z.

the reason is ATI HL2 DX9 and its NVIDIA OGL D3 is because Ati had a big ole game with HL2 and nvidia needed a big game too... if anyone remembers back to E3 2003 Doom3 was run using a 9800pro... then all of a sudden Doom3 had Nvidias "sponsership" why... because its all down to We cant let ATI have 2 of the biggest "next gen" games. While yes ATi have good DX9 but its only a few FPS between the two... same with NVidia its deemed good at OpenGL but its onyl a few FPS there as well...

kind of and old wives tale

nvidia seem to have been the ones for OpenGL in the past (not so sure now), which is quite likely why their Quadro line did better than the ATI FireGL stuff.

As for ID switching, maybe they were pissed with ATI leaking something?
