my other comp has a dx9 card, nvidia pci-e fx 5750. but when i go to the advanced video option in cs source, it says hardware dx level= 8.
any ideas?

Driver that enables dx9 use?........sorry im not to clued up on nvidia fx series

FX cards revert to DX8.1 because they well.... suck with DX9

I think you can force it by putting "-dxlevel 9" in the launch options, but wait for someone to confirm that.

Any noticeable differences between DX8 and 9?
I have a gf 5700LE :frown:

Think of it this way: Everything that makes the source engine special happens in DX9 mode.

direct x9 rules!!!..........i just can't wait to play stalker, damn they use it heavily.

Really? I still get the bump mapping, nice water fx and shaders...
Mine looks just as good as any screenshots/videos I've seen anywhere. Am I missing something??

well then the card isnt what it says it is lol...mnd you never heard of the 'le' version

good so all of this is normal?
also when i used auto detect for far cry's display settings, it puts everything as "low"

i have a FX5700VE (256mb) and it says in the menu that DX level = DX9 ..(or something like that...its DX9 soo :) )

there are two settings (harware DX level, and software DX level)

you should have one say DX9 (software) as you should have the latest version of Directx.

the other is dependant on your card. (the FX series has horrible performance under Dx9 as it is not a true DX9 card, Hl2 defaults it to dx8)

My brother has the FX5200 and runs in DX8 he prefers it to DX9 (things appear a bit more shiny), also the water is not as impressive but impressive nonetheless... this is based on CS:S I dunno about HL2.

if you have good performance under DX8 with your card, and you are only thinking of upgrading to get a dx9 card (to have DX9 features) I would say wait for the next iteration of Ati/Nvidia gpu technology.

Nah Dark, you're not missing much. The completely reflective water, shiny surfaces, etc will show up in DX8. The one major difference is that the shiny effects in DX8 are quite a bit more pronounced, often to the point of being unrealistic, and in some cases, things that aren't supposed to shine, do (like the walls of the Chateau).

I've compared closely between two machines running DX8 and 9 side by side, and the difference is small.
