I would like something that can record me playing Half Life 2, and also records the game's sound. I don't want to buy FRAPS, so freeware is what I'd like.

No. You record the demo first. Then you stop the demo. Then you type in a command to record it in a video format and play the demo. If you watch the video above it explains it very clearly and very slowly.
I tried it, it seemed to work, but when I opened it in WMM, and other Video Editing softwares, I got 'Unknown File Format', even thought it was marked as AVI.
I'm not sure what video codec Source Recorder uses; AVI is just a container. Ffdshow supports "H.264, MPEG-4, MPEG-2, H.263, VP3, VP6, Theora, MJPEG, SVQ3, MP3, AC3, DTS, E-AC3, AAC, and Vorbis". Should let you view any one of those in Windows Media Player.
