As promised, the upcoming big 2.5 update for X3: Terran Conflict will remove the copy protection. In my opinion, Egosoft is to praise for this nice and fair behaviour.
More info here.

Ah YES!

All of the new features are things that I've always hoped would make it into the official game :D

Thanks for posting this!

I love the X games. I just wish I had a gaming PC right now to play it. Still haven't seen the Terran Conflict.

Im thirsty for a space games. I tried this one out a while ago and i didnt like it at all. Controls were confusing, voice acting is terrible, and the biggest flaw is that there is no multipayer.

It's a bit late...

If X4 ships without it then that'd be good, but unless they re-do the UI again I won't be buying that either.

Great exploration and role playing space games.

Don't go into them expecting great combat and good story though, pretty mediocre in those departments.
Might give Terran Conflict a try now.

This. The X games are meant to be slow and reflective. No other space games I played have the same fascinating look-and-feel of the X series.
Plus, the post-buying support from Egosoft is awesome. They never get tired of releasing patches and fixes. And when they say that the DRM will be removed in a year, they keep their word.

Yeah. I heard about this.

Not sure when it'll get released though. Supposedly in the release candidate stage, but it could be released a couple weeks or a couple months from now.

Didn't read the thread/Didn't read the link/Have no idea about anything involved in this thread:

Why are people cheering abut copy protection removal? Buy the ****ing game LOL

Some of the fans have purchased multiple copies of the game because they have suffered disc failures or losses.

Copy Protection removal doesn't only help pirates, just as copy protection doesn't only hurt pirates. Legitimate customers are affected as well.

Yes, I bought the game on release date. Egosoft is a small company, making niche games, and I understand the need for a DRM to prevent casual piracy on the initial period. They promised to remove the copy protection after a year, and they are keeping their word. This is good :)

How well did it deter piracy? I remember seeing it out on the interbutts not long after it came out.

We are talking about casual piracy. At some extent, the guys at Egosoft think that their scheme is working for them, since they did the same thing for X3: Reunion (and X2, maybe): shipped with a copy protection system, removed after a year.

Casual piracy? I dont even think thats a legitimate term. All piracy is the same, download the game and the crack/serial key. Done. Its less of a hassle than the legitimate game usually.

I'm not going to start another discussion about piracy. All I can say is that, if a small company counting on a loyal fanbase behave like this, well, they must have some good reason, don't you think? ;)

IIRC Egosoft has done this with all of their games ever since the original X, shame not more developers follow their example.

This is what is good about small companies: every fan counts and has to be respected with fairness and product support.

Well maybe the removal of DRM shows some form of respect for their customers but the main issue in my book was the use of Starforce to begin with. I don't touch Starforce titles.

Agreed. They made that mistake just once, with X3: Reunion. In that case I waited for its removal before buying the game.

Paradox also handles this well, they do not include disc-protection in their games, their 'safeguard' is that to gain access to the mod and tech-help forums for their new games, you need to register your serial online.

Just thought I would bump this thread to let you guys know the update is officially out, both for retail and steam users :)

Enjoy.
