Just started playing this and I can't get into it for the life of me. I know alot of my friends are addicted to it but I can't get into it. I like RPGs, I play Lord of the Rings online alot, got addicted to it fast, but Oblivion, not so much. Just wondering what some tips for a new player would be. I'm currently playing as a mage and I'm trying to join the mage's guild, but that's not doing it for me either. Should I be doing the main quest line?

It may be that it's not an online game
I have issues with games like that to
Try doing the main quest then th e various guild and side quests
Get some mods to

I know some people do get addicted to online games but any time I think about it I shit myself laughing.

Think very carefully about the word addicted, it implies you have some sort of psychological dependence that forces you to play the game. Besides all Western MMOs are the same brand of grind.

Ah, way to take me completely literally. People never exaggerate on the internets, oh no. Anyway, this thread isn't about MMOs. I'm looking for tips as to oblivion play.

1) YOU MUST download these mods for a start. It is the law.
BTMod, OOO, Qarls Texture Pack 2 or 3, Slof's Horses, Arrow Fletching & Imbuing, Survival Suite, Illumination Within, Natural Environments, and then ask around for other peoples fave mods - there are loads.

2) Tweak the .ini file until you get the best performance / eye candy ratio.

3) Start a new game. DO NOT do the main quest straight off, get to Weynon Priory and stop. Save the main quest until there is absolutely nothing else to do and you are bored shitless.

Most importantly:

4) Walk the earth, you know, like Kain in Kung Fu, walk from place to place, meet people, get into adventures.

That is all.

Word of advice. I wandered for a long time before touching the main quest and I had a hard time in Kvatch (was that the name of that destroyed town?). If I went there straight away, I would face imps and some other weak enemies, easy to kill, considering the fact you've got level 9 guards on your side. But I went there at level 12, I think, and I had to fight some big ass strong creatures (Dremoras [sp?] etc.) that killed the guards in one hit.

So you might want to complete Kvatch early in the game.

Mods.

Seriously, you can basically add a few more "main quests" if you're bored. Or cities. Or both. Oblivion has a great mod community, be sure to stop by TES Nexus. The top 100 list is a good way to get started. Just pray to the divinity of your choice that the game stays stable, you can get some serious crashing problems if you do it wrong.

If anyone wants some uber-kick-ass mods PM me 'cause as a long-time mod user i know the good ones ^_-

I've got a fantastic suggestion - Play Morrowind instead.

I would agree, but those damn gates opening up all over the landscape further into the main quest ruined it for me. The harder bad guys at kvatch when and if you get to it are a small price to pay for a less annoying environment. Also, with OOO installed, the balance shouldn't be a problem.

^agreed. those gates really pised me off.
"you cant teleport, youre being attacked" i was f*cking miles away.

If a guy mentions a painting/painter/paintbrush, don't do that quest. That's the quest that made me stop playing.

^ truth.
Also, if somebody mentions a dream/nightmare/rescue, don't do that quest. That's the quest that made him stop playing.

I think i know what quest you are on about,i couldnt do it it was pissing me of so much so i just reloaded a earlier save which was only from about 10 mins before anyway.

Wasn't hard? I was an archer. I was given something like three bottles of turpentine to kill the trolls. Three bottles of turpentine can only work with three arrows. One arrow, shot with my sneaking multiplier, and the turpentine on, was not enough to bring one troll down to half health. All other arrows did so little damage that it barely registered. There were at least 10 trolls. Even when I tried to avoid the trolls they ended up knocking out the idiot I had to bring the paintbrush too. Which meant that I couldn't get to him without killing the trolls. I overwrote my one save game upon entering the painting.

^lol.... i managed to get onto a rock so only a couple could reach at
a time... i was pretty leveled up too...so i cut them to shit with a poisoned sword.

I couldnt even kill one,i also tried just running for it i ran there got the paintbrush managed to run all the way back while being chased by a shitload of trolls and got killed because the tosser i was supposed to give the brush too was running round trying to fight the trolls!

Ok, I'm starting this up again after a year. I played a little vanilla, and hated it because of the ai-match leveling thing.

I am playing vanilla +

BTMod
Oscoros Oblivion Overhaul 1.33
Qarls Texture Pack 3

Trying to install the "Illumination Within Revised" mod.

I am using the Mod Manager but having a hell of a time making "OMOD" files.

Is the Fletching and Imbueing mod compatible with OOO? Would it severely unbalance the game?

Fletching and imbuing is compatible with OOO, and no it isn't unbalanced, it is one of the most well thought out and balanced mods I played. You can set the amount of arrows crafted to a low, medium, or high figure to manually balance and suit your gameplay preference.

It makes use of all the crap lying around like bones and nuggets etc to craft the arrows, and various plants / items to imbue them with more destructive properties.

Install it naow.

I also recommend Survival Suite with this mod, it is useful for hunting wildlife.

and don't forget slof's horses instead of the crappy plastic vanilla ones.
