i started playing half life 1 today (for the first time in about 5 years) and i was wondering where exactally you see Dr Kleiner and Eli Vance because they arent in the first 2 chapters where the experiment goes wrong and is alyx in it aswell because if my memory serves me she says 'ou dont remember me from black mesa do you' so please give you thoughts and advise.

They are both in the first chapter and Alyx isnt in it.

Kliener isn't in it.

The thing with Eli; he's supposed to be the person who tells you to go up to the surface (as they say in HL2), but in HL1 he's never referred to as Eli, nor does he look or sound the same. It's just a little thing Valve added into the second game as a reference; in HL1, he's little more than a generic scientist.

they really dont say any names, but they are both there. Or we can go back and forth and say they werent

i think you could really just say neither kleiner nor eli are there since they give no names. it's easier to say that the likeness and voice talent are the same, for the most part-- so why not say they're both therE? i think that's probably what was intended anyway.

here:

# Half-Life 2 (2004) (VG) (voice) .... Dr. Isaac Kleiner
# Half-Life: Blue Shift (2001) (VG) (voice) .... Scientists

# Half-Life: Opposing Force (1998) (VG) (voice) .... Scientists
# Half-Life (1998) (VG) (voice) .... Security Guard Barney Calhoun/Marines

all from the same guy.

if Kliener is there, you simply wouldn't know it because no one tells you so, and since half the scientists in the game look like him, it's easier to say he simply wasn't there. At least with Eli, we know, even it wasn't originally planned as such. :)

They both worked with gordon in black mesa. So they were there.

So was Shephard, but that doesnt meant he was in HL1. ;) I remember Kleiner being Gordon's lecturer at MIT, as well, so they didn't neccessarily work together at Black Mesa, Kleiner just recommended Gordon.

im actually kinda curious now. im gonna search around to see if valve had said anything on the subject. Ill report back if i find something.

You may be right, Firecrack - it was at the end of Blue Shift, if I remember.

Kleiner was bashing the padlock off the gate, Eli was at the wheel of a BMRF car and some bearded bloke was talking to you as Barney, sounding very excited at having "made it" out of Black Mesa.

Kleiner, nor Eli, were in Blue Shift. Those scientists were called Walter and Simmons, Rosenberg being the "bearded" one. :)

Nope, the guys at the end of Blue Shift are named Walter and Simmons.
Edit: beaten to it. :p

Kliener doesn't officially appear in HL1 (he is in the instruction booklet though) so even if he is in the game, no-one knows which one would be him anyways.

Eli and Barney are the only HL2 characters that we can actually identify in HL1.

Oh yeah, sorry Kage, I remember now. I only saw the end bit recently and didn't remember their names from when I played it properly years ago.

You've got to be kidding me. If this isn't a joke, then see any one of the dozens of security guards that are in the game.

Yeah and strangely enough, Barney is every one of them..

isn't kleiner the last scientist you see at the end of half life before you go to xen? the one that makes the portal, and the security guard thats with him might be the real barney?

wasn't Eli the generic black scientist that's doing CPR when you come out of the test chamber after the explosion? He says some stuff and opens the door for you.

No.
No.
No.

There is no speculation on who Eli is. No theories, no question. Eli is the black scientist in the room right at the top of the first elevator-thing in a room that has a computer as a wall and part of it is broken. Within this same room are three vacuume tube-things, two of which have headcrabs in them, one of which is completely shattered apart.

When you first enter the room, before the Resonance Cascade Scenerio right after you hear "They're waiting for you Gordon... in the test chamber, you go into this room and the computer-wall breaks apart and Eli and some mustached old scientist run to the computer. "What the hell is going on with our equipment?" Eli asks, "It wasn't meant to do this in the first place," the other scientist replies.

After the Resonance cascade, the mustached scientist is sitting on the ground in front of that same broken computer saying "Why wouldn't they listen? We tried to warn them." Eli is comforting him, notices you, and remarks, "Gordon! You're alive! Thank God for that hazard suit! All of our phones are out... get to the surface and let someone know that we're down here. I'm sure if you need scanner access, the rest of the science team would be more than happy to help." And then he opens up the door for you.

Dr. Kleiner, on the other hand, may or may not be in the original Half-Life. In the manual, it says
As fortune would have it, his mentor at M.I.T., Professor Alex Kleiner, had taken charge of a research project being conducted at a decommissioned missile base in Black Mesa, New Mexico. Kleiner was looking for a few bright associates, and Gordon was his first choice. Considering the source and amount of funds available to the Black Mesa Labs, Gordon suspected that he would be involved in some sort of weapons research; but in the hopes that practical civilian applications would arise (in areas of quantum computing and astrophysics), he accepted Kleiner's offer.

Now that should clear this question up for at least a day.

where abouts is barney in it??

Barney is the conglomoration of all of the Barneys, just like Kleiner (although he is mentioned in the manual) is the conglomoration of all the spectacled scientists. I think it's part of Valve's way of reminding us that it's a game... by having parts of the story line up with the original, but not exactly.

And Alyx is NOWHERE in it. She was probably a kid at the time of the incident... maybe Eli once invited Gordon over for dinner and he saw her then... "You don't remember me..."

Hopefully the BlackMesa:Source team will probably add Eli's likeness in somewhere.

And i thought Barney was the one banging on the door in your tram ride?
(although he is a conglomoration of all barneys, natch.)

It's this simple:

Kleiner is the bald scientist with glasses. Eli is the black scientists. Every time you see either of these, it's supposed to be Kleiner or Eli.

Actually this is false. The Barney in the game is Barney Calhoun, the character you play in Blue Shift. To answer the original question, Calhoun is the one banging on the door during the HL intro.

There's speculation the photo in Gordon's locker is of Alyx.

Oh, and to clear up the Kliener issue with a quote from Laidlaw:

"Kleiner, for instance, was everywhere and nowhere in the first game. As you pointed out, he was in the manual, and he was present (though not named) in and around the Test Chamber."

riomhaire, i that is just a typing error Pai-Mai. That quote is from the half life 2 game guide, and in there it said Issac Kliner, not alex.

I don't think the photo in Gordon's locker is of Alyx. Why would he have a picture of his friend's daughter?

Barney Calhoun is the first Barney you see in HL1 (you play as him in Blue Shift).

Eli was in Anomalous materials, the scientist that tells you to call for help and opens the door for you with the retinal scanner.

I believe kliener was in the Lambda complex, the scientist that grabs the shotgun but puts it back down again when he finds out its you (the entrance to the teleporter chamber).

Well done, you've just repeated what practically ever user on the first two pages said. Here, have a medal. :|
And Kliener isn't in the Lambda complex either, I don't think.

Everytime i play through half life 1, i like to think the scientist leaving via chopper you see in the tram ride, is Breen :D

I like that theory. It makes perfect sense that he would be escaping ahead of time.

Barneys are coterminous

That is the quote of the week!!!

I didn't know that Barney Calhoun owed you a beer...

I think the general consensus is that gearbox work just doesn't have an effect on the Half-life story. As Overwatch so eloquently put it, the Barney's are coterminus and THE Barney in HL2 is just the general character of the Barney's in HL1... including the ones that owed you beer.

No, he's actually right. Although I lost my own manual long ago (still have the ORIGINAL CD, though), I've just been getting this information from a transcript of the Manual on PlanetHalflife. And it DOES say Alex...

Hmmm.... plot hole? Or did they change it in a later manual?

On a tangent, an odd thing about the original copy of the game is that you do NOT have a phD. In version 1.0 of Half-Life, the tram ride tells you that you have a bachelors degree in general physics with an undecided major. I don't know which patch they changed it with, I guess they just wanted you to actually be a "highly trained professional."

The reason they changed it, is because they liked the name Alyx for Eli's daughter, and thought it would be more fitting, not so if Kliener was also called Alex.

So they changed it.

In which manual do they call him Alex Kleiner? I have the manual from the original generations (Half Life, OpFor and TFC) but the only mention of Kleiner in it is a letter from the 'Office of the Administrator' and it refers to a 'Dr. Kleiner', no first names are given.

It also says at the end;
"Like Dr. Kleiner, we are confident that your career with the Black Mesa Research Facility will be a long and rewarding one." Sure got that one right...

He may have done outside the game. It's just a nicely ambiguous 'in joke'.

Of course, but the only character in the HL universe called Barney is Barney Calhoun. You're saying Valve would create a second Barney rather than use the existing persona.

http://www.hlfallout.net/forums/index.php?showtopic=300

Barney is both a representation of all the other Barneys and a character all to himself.

I didn't know that Barney Calhoun owed you a beer...

if you talk to him sometimes he says 'talk to me later and i'll buy you a beer' or something along those lines
