Anyone have suggestions for good, preferably free encryption software for an external hard drive? I've got a BlackArmor seagate drive which has nice encryption software, but I'm going to be bringing my FreeAgent drive home this saturday with all my work and stuff on it, and I want to make sure that if, god forbid, I lose the drive somewhere in the airport nobody can access my files. Some of my work is company work, which shouldn't get out to the public, but more importantly is my own personal artwork which could possibly be sold and distributed on the interwebs for a ton of money, and I would be pissed about that.

So any suggestions?

Did you just do a google search and then post the first result? Because I already did that. I'm hoping for recommendations based off of experience with the software.

EDIT: Do not forget your password, or your stuff is as good as gone.

Delete everything and use an unerase program to get it back when you need it?

kidding - I'll hop on the Truecrypt bandwagon (although I haven't used it - our I.T. department encrypts our stuff and I don't know what they use).

As an alternative to TrueCrypt, you could give Conceal a shot. The simple-to-use interface makes it a breeze to encrypt and decrypt your files.

I've used Truecrypt a bit (not much mind, I don't need anything encrypting) and it seems really good, especially if you use keyfiles which can be anything. So as well as a really strong password you can choose any file to act as another barrier. Even if the password is forced, the fact they don't have the keyfile will not let them in.

Only downside is because it works off CRC you'd need to make sure you had multiple exact copies of that file elsewhere, as if you lost it you wouldn't be able to get at your files anymore.
