Problem::

Hi, i cannot understand how this problem arose, i way playing CSS one night, next day went to load up CSS again and it always quits out with the error message above. Before the crash i had no driver updates, or any new hardware! To now i have tried, reinstalling HL2, Reinstalling full Steam Client and starting again, Wiping off version of catalys Drivers, Using driver clean to make sure everything was gone, grabbed the latest Cat's and installed and still the same, i can usually work around these things, but i find myself needing help on this one :D

It sounds to me like the DirectX drivers got corrupted. However, you did mention you're using version 9.0c, and you did say that you went through all the updates.

Hmm...

You can try validating your steam files to see if it is, in fact, a Steam/CS problem here: http://steampowered.com/index.php?area=news&archive=yes&id=351

Additionally, you can try running the Disk Defragmenter to help clear up the memory (START->All Programs->Accessories->System Tools->Disk Defragmenter).

Strange. I'm fairly confident that this problem is with DirectX, just not sure what the best way to fix it is. Probably just reinstalling DirectX 9.0c? Oh well, just for fun you can check this link: (update.microsoft.com) to make sure Windows and all its components are updated.

I'll see if I can find any more information on your problem.

Well, all windows patches and everything bang up to date....still no joy. Just about to re-install DirectX and see if its any help, will report back in ;)

Yeah I agree with A True Canadian. Disk-Defrag, Clean Windows Prefecth Folder, Validate Steam Files, Re-Install DX9, Do memTest86.

Good Luck.

No joy with the DirectX Reinstall, tried everything else mentioned and still no avail..... Last time this happened the only way i got round it was buying a new system, and i dont think the missus would be pleased if i had to do that again ;)

Tough luck.

I've been searching and found out that it is a DirectX driver compatability issue. The only problem is that I haven't found a proper fix for it. However, there is more things to try...

There's two options that worked for some people but one of them is a little extreme:

Person A's solution said:
I turned off Sideband Addressing and Fast Write on my motherboard and played the 2 games without crashing. My frame rate was down 5-15%, but hey, at least its not giving me BSOD and crashes...

That would seem a little too risky/dangerous for me to attempt myself. You did mention you were fairly confident with PCs, so you can give 'er a try (if you can figure out how to do it :P ).

The second possible solution is a little more safe:

Person B's solution said:
Use catalyst 4.12

Worked for me.

Apparently the new Catalyst drivers are really buggy. Reverting back to a version like 4.12 (if possible) could help fix the problem. We're into version 6.4 I believe, so you have about 12 different drivers you can try if 4.12 doesn't do the job.

I'll continue to look into it if you're still unsuccessful by tomorrow. Keep us updated and good luck. :D

hmm... the top option is a nogo, bad experiences :) However reverting back to previous Catalyst Drivers is a good plan, i'll un-install these n head back to older ones.

Will update.

Good ol' 4.12's :D:D:D:D

Seems to have sorted the problem for now, three seperate games on differnet servers dong a full disconnect reconnect every time. Now i wonder when were getting the next stable cats.....

Thanks for all the help guys, appreciated.

Probably not a Catalyst problem for you, so turn your DirectX down to 8 until someone can get a fix for you. I have the same problem on my brand new PC, though I haven't used it for two weeks now.
