Engine Error message

I use XP. Recently I formatted my computer, installed what was on my Driver and Utilities CDs, updated my graphics driver, and got all the current automatic updates.

So after I got my computer up and running again, I reinstalled Steam and installed HL2 and CSS. Each time I try to start either one, this message appears:

"Engine Error
Unable to init shader system"

I don't know if this is a common problem or not, and I never experienced this problem at all until today, but any help would be nice. I browsed through the Hardware & Software area, but the threads i checked didn't relate to this problem.

This error is caused by incorect graphic drivers or DirectX. I suggest you to verify that you have the latest version of DirectX. You can do a dxdiag (start menu, run...), in the display tab, make sure everyting is enabled. Also, in the display properties (right click on desktop), make sure Hardware Acceleration is set to FULL. Finally, uninstall your vid card drivers, download the latest and reinstall. It would be easier to help you if we'd had your system informations (vid card).

you need latest drivers... not what was on your CD
