engine error (?) (what's a vertex?)

when i play half life 2, i am on chapter 1 - i have left the train station - i get to a playground, with a seesaw, a slide, etc., i go down an alley, towards a doorway, i get the 'loading' message, then the game takes me to the main menu.
if i try to load a savegame, i get a CTD (crash to desktop) and an error box like this :-

engine error
too many verts for a dynamic vertex buffer (112281 x 32768) tell a programmer to up VERTEX_BUFFER_SIZE

then i get a couple of fatal error notification boxes, to tell me half life 2 shut down...
i have a gigabyte 2004 rz motherboard
amd athlon 2400
tornado geforce 4 mx
512mb ddr ram

i only bought this game today, i usually play morrowind - i think i'll be playing morrowind again...
any idea what this problem could be? i did a search on google, which pointed me to the same error message quote, but the topic had been deleted.
HELP!!!
thankyou..

i tried that just now, after reinstalling the game, i tried each dx level, and i still get the same thing - it won't let me through that door - sounds like a bar on the other side, judging by the noise, people talking ... might that be processor heavy? but according to the game box, 1.2 ghz is the minimum, and mine is close to twice that - i know my graphics card isnt great, but i've never had any gaming problems with it - and 512 ram is easily enough - so i really dont know why i cant play this game...

WELL, i've tried every fix i could find, and nothing works - VALVE/SIERRA/STEAM = IF YOU ARE READING THIS, YOU STOLE 35 POUNDS FROM ME AND THEN USED ME AS A PLAYTESTER - AND I FELL FOR IT - I WAS ENTICED BY THE PROMISE OF "BEST GAME EVER" REVIEWS WHICH ARE CLEARLY UNFOUNDED - YOU RELEASED A HALF-FINISHED PIECE OF SHAREWARE WITH SOME POTENTIAL FOR OTHER, MORE TALENTED, ORGANISED AND PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPERS - I LOOK FORWARD TO SEEING YOUR HALF-BAKED IDEAS BROUGHT TO FRUITION AND EXPLOITED TO THEIR FULL POTENTIAL BY COMPETENT GAMING COMPANIES - I WILL NOW GO AND TELL 10 PEOPLE TO TELL 10 PEOPLE NEVER TO TRUST YOU, OR PURCHASE ANY MERCHANDISE BEARING ANY OF YOUR LOGOS.

well - that was my michael moore style rant - but hey,
p.s.! - all hail the mighty bethesda, and morrowind! - gamers and modders paradise - a great game which works perfectly, and just keeps getting better and better because people love it so much they keep modding it, and improving it and feeding the community - bethesda make games - eidos make games - these cowboys just ripped us off...

I'd look for newer graphics card drivers, as vertex is probably 3d related.

elevator? sounds like some people can get a little further into the game than others - well, i have now got the latest nvidia graphics drivers, and i'm still getting the same error. also, if i try deleting the 'blob' so steam re-updates, it then won't run half life 2 at all - it gives a box saying the game is updating, but it doesnt - so i have to uninstall the whole thing and reinstall...
well i think i know what the problem is anyway - i'm convinced its the 'decrypting game files' process which is causing so many glitches for everyone - i don't think this technology is reliable, i can see their motivation - they dont want people pirating the game - but, the security technology they've made to stop that happening has made the game unplayable...

WELL DONE STEAM!!! goodnight and thankyou...

I get this in hammer at different points on a map i built myself. I have a 6800. It is 3d related and that is all I know right now.
