Engine Licensing

I haven't heard a solid figure from them, but it will likely be a hell of a lot. Though the DIII engine may be licenced for a lot more.

Valve were intending to provide a "middle-ground" approach for startup developers in addition to normal licensing. Presumably, this would involve a lower initial cost, possibly with a royalty payment to Valve, and less support.

I think $350,000 was for the UT engine... I don't think Valve had put an exact price on their engine.

What I've heard is that HL2 will be wanting between 350 and 400K for their engine. Id engines tend to actually be much cheaper. I was quoted 90K from somewhere.
Too much for a student like myself to even contemplate anyway. Just nab Q2. It's 50 bucks. lol

I would expect Carmack to release the Q3 source when it's reached end-of-life (i.e., no other licensees are making commercial products with it). Could be this Christmas, and that would open the door for a whole load of mod teams to go commeccial.

hmmmm, its basiclly expensive :D nuff said :P

Don't trust the ID software website. It's not been updated for a long time ;)!!
Q3 won't be releasing it's full source to the public anytime this year. Q2 was only release a good few years after it started dying, and Q3 is still the basis for quite a few FPS titles out there even now. Guess we'll have to wait at least a year and a half for that one.
