Enlighten - Real-time radiosity lighting sdk

I didn't watch the video because youtube hates my uni laptop, but I read about it on the site and saw some screenshots, and it seems pretty cool.

If it really is that optimised then games should really start using it. Penumbra could really do with it because half the time you're using a torch.

I just came. Now I have that guilty feeling.

It's cool how it adapts to the colour the light is shining on.

I'd be interested to see the specs required to use this.

Cryengine 2 uses radiosity lighting aswell, it just doesn't do colour bounces and colour bleed very well, so it isn't quite as complex.

Looks great, doesn't the source SDK have something like this now? Maybe I'm confusing this with something.

No. The Source engine uses radiosity but it's all baked into the maps geometry.

You should, you failed Christ. But still, this is truly amazing. What blew my mind was that when it hit the carpet, the radiosity lighting changed to the same reddish color. Truly amazing.

By the way, I found a real time test of radiosity here - http://lightsprint.com/
Probably not as refined, but it's still pretty cool.

Hi guys,

Thanks for your great comments - it's really pleasing to know how our work is appreciated. Normally we avoid commenting on forums and the like, as it draws too much attention and sadly we often get pulled into the PS3 vs. Xbox 360 fanboy war (strangely, considering we run on both). However, I've been lurking about here for a while anyway, and so it was a nice surprise to see our video being posted. Therefore, I figured you guys might be interested in hearing about our new stuff.

On Monday we released two more videos (http://www.geomerics.com/enlighten-media.htm), and I hope that you find them just as exciting, if not more. In the pre-release video we just showed one room as a teaser... now we're showing you our more complicated, more game-like levels.

So, one of the new videos is a cinematic version, showing off these bigger levels without a user interface drawn all over it.

And the other is another workflow demonstration with our artist using our in-house tool to Make Stuff Pretty. It's much longer than the first and shows off even more cool stuff you can do with radiosity.

The precise specs and framerate is something I'm reluctant to talk about. This isn't because it's dog slow, which most people assume when we dodge the question, but it's because the FPS jumps higher and higher every day. It's already fast enough to easily get into a commercial game, and we're working on improving that even more. And the hard-ware - while quite high spec - is nowhere NEAR what you'll need to run Crysis :naughty:

If you want to get updates on when we release new stuff, I've set up a YouTube channel for just that purpose! http://www.youtube.com/user/Geomerics/

I hope you enjoy :)

PjB, you considered in the future you might release something like a free techdemo to test on our computers? I'd love that.

I've suggested the idea to the team already, actually. However, we're waiting to see how much public interest there is after GDC :)

Even if we do get the reaction we'd like, it also presents certain risks, such as the risk of someone reverse engineering our technology, and related legal complications. So I'm not denying that we'd like to, but I don't think it's particularly likely, I'm afraid.

Hey PjB, thanks for the update. Im really psyched about this (as you can probably tell since i started the thread), and I cant wait to be able to play around with it in the future. Those videos are ace, and im downloading the high res workflow video as i type this. Ive also subscribed to the youtube channel, so im looking forward to seeing the updates. Keep up the awesome work.

Cheers Krynn! I hope you enjoy the HD video - the YouTubes really don't do it justice at all!

(Is your name a DragonLance reference, by any chance?)

I can't wait till GDC then, no doubt you'll get plenty of interest. Having realistic lighting like that in games/mods would be amazing, just think of the possibilities with horror games and creating strong visual moods in general.

Well, you won't have to wait long! GDC is this week :D

I rarely hear this from a development team, it actually made my day :D

Have you been approached by other developers?

(Is your name a DragonLance reference, by any chance?)

Im pretty sure it is. Ive been asked that before, and I didnt really know anything about it. I stole the name from some guy I played Ultima Online with a long long time ago, and im sure he got it from the books. :)

This is a huge step forward for lighting in games. :D

Very nice tech! I'll be following this, would love to get the chance to use it one day.

Keep up the good work!
