After watching the season finale of Stargate SG1, Serenity and revenge of the sith i have the urge to play something epic. Something with large scale space battles. I am not into RTS...I want a single player game that's a bit like X-Wing with simple controls.

any suggestions?

Freespace 2 is a very nice game. Its also 100% *FREE* now. You don't need to buy it.

There's an open source community that is also upgrading the graphics and everything for the game.

This won't come as a surprise but you should get Freespace 2 (http://www.freespace2.com/)!

Its free, so search any torrent site and you will find it.

Edit: What a pun, freespace is free haha. o_o

Freelancer is pretty fun. It should be somewhere in the bargain bin. Plus there was a huge community that made loads and loads of mods. There are still quite a lot of people playing it, most of whom can be found here

Free download of all the images for freespace 2!

Remember, its not pirating... the game was officially announced to be freely downloaded anywhere, the sourcecode and everything is FREE for people to do as they please.

It also helps that its one of the best space games of all time.

Star Ranger is pretty fun. Basic plot is that you have to dogfight a lot of star fighters to save the galaxy.

I've been playing Gallactic Civilizations II, and it's awesome - although I've been playing it too much and should take a break before I burn myself out.

freespace 2 is a definent winner, i remember some missions with awesome battles.

x3 seems fun, haven't played it much yet.

Starlancer's pretty good too.

It's an oldie but a goodie.

QFT! I'm in the same boat. My love for Firefly and Serenity caused me to pick up X3. You can be a pirate like Mal and the gang and have big battles like the one from the end of Serenity. X3 is my favorite game in a long time. I played the hell out of it and still will in the future. This damn GalCiv2 is killing me though. It's taking all of my gaming time.

I'm trying to get myself pumped for GalCiv2 again. I havent picked it up until I realized some of the problems in it. These things should be fixed in 1.1, but I wanna be pumped for it again when thats released :)

Battlefront II. It's star wars, there are space battles, land battles, it's pretty simplistic, big battles with bots, what else is there to say? But multiplayer kinda sucks.

I haven't tried the demo, only the full game. As a result I'm not sure what the demo entails or what you start with. I don't know what the OP considers "epic" but the late/end-game in X3 is where the big battles happen. I'll be the first to admit that X3 can start very slowly. Making money is a thought provoking excercise and it's slow going for a while.

Having said that though I recently had a battle with 1 M1 (capital ship carrier), 2 TLs (big station transports outfitted with lots of guns), and 4 M6 (big corvettes) with probably around 40 or so M3 (heavy fighters) all engaged against an enemy fleet about half it's size. Very fun to say the least. Of course it took me months to get all that together, but that's besides the point.

The in-game scripting is easy enough to pick up though, and if cheating's your thing you can quickly and easily give yourself whatever you want.

X3 looks very cool.

Going to borrow my buddies Freelancer.

Just downloaded Freespace 2

And re-installed Homeworld 2

... space action for me until summer!

holy crap that is awesome!

It reminds me of the PDS mod for homeworld 2, except you fly the ships yourself. I'll definatley try out this Freespace 2.

Oh, and even if you aren't interested in RTS space games, the homeworld series is the best bet you have in that area.

I would recommend Homeworld 2 with the PDS mod (www.pds.hwaccess.net)
This mod, which originally started as a simple mini-mod to put point defense weapons on homeworld 2 ships so that they could shoot missiles, has now evolved into an insane modification with dozens of new ships, and throws an absolutley incredible number of weapons on their ships, making firefights quite massive (for instance, the vanilla battlecruiser had 6 cannons and four beam weapons, the PDS battlecruiser has well over 20 cannons, 12-14 beam weapons, several autocannons and two missile batteries)

Here's a video to show you what I mean...
http://files.filefront.com/PDSv50Twmv/;4585511;;/fileinfo.html
this one is incredibly old though (version 5.0, the newest is 8.0) However, I chose this video to show you the best of PDS, before it started going downhill after 6.1 (7.0 was tolerable however) Now instead of the mod being "let's see how many guns we can throw onto these ships and have cool battles!" into "let's see how realistic we can make this mod!" NGCS(the spinoff of pds) is an utter waste, and if you still want PDS action I would check out version 8.0 skirmishes, or 7.0 (both of which have nukes...) and if you want the crazy firefights, you'll have to download 6.1

Trust me, if you have homeworld 2, PDS will give you a whole new dimension on the game.

X3 maybe... They just released 1.4 patch, which should be really great. :)

Wow /sarcasm

Seriously, I just never found that game appealing. The graphics are 'In your face' for sure, but gameplay is repetitive and gets dull.

Seriously there is no point in making a vast universe, when 60% is devoid of any unique stuff to do.
