episode 2 app error: could not read memory HELP!

i need some help!
i installed hl2 ep 2 about 1 day ago and after playing about 15 min, until you see the first hunter, i got on the roof to go through the opening to open the gate for alyx and my game stutter for around 30 second and gives me the "Application Error: blahblahblah could not read memory"
i've been searching for a patch and i've toyed with my paging file and decreased the settings on my computer, to no avail, this never happened to me with the first hl2 :/

specs:
Athlon 3000+
512 DDRram
Geforce 5700 Ultra
80 seagate barracuda HD

this computer is pretty old, but i ran the first hl2 with no problems
please help!

You don't need to search for a patch if you've got steam.

Abit low tbh, If the battle is so crazeh on 512, youd not have enough virtual memmory to run the game.

first off,
not pirated.
i do have steam, but the obviously valve doesn't have the brains to realize that a good amount of people are having crashes on the same exact spots.
as for my ram, it is quite low since my computer is old
but,
i know people with 4 GB of ram and an Geforce 8600 and they're having the same exact problem in either the same area or somewhere else altogether.

on another note, i went a ahead and finished portal, which was awesome and has kept me going, but i don't know what the deal is :/

Usually that kind of stuff is cause of a faulty Mem stick, or faulty Mem slot, however, if this is the only program where it happens, I dont think thats the case.

it can't be faulty memory sticks, because i ran this utility which determines that and nothing came up

plus, i've played everything else including portal with no problems whatsoever, and like i said people with a ****in 8600 are having the same exact problems :/

i just wish windows would post a hotfix or that valve would pick up the damn slack.

either way, thank ya'll who have responded for helping me trouble shoot, anyone else hears any kind of solution, even to get me past this one part,
