Gabe Newell Said To Us That: Episodic games will allow us to release games more frequently...

These are more or less the words that Gabe Newell said to us when HL2 EP1 was released. Now I don't know about you but a gap of two or three years between (5 hour) games isn't exactly frequent.

Now I know that VALVe have been busy with L4D2 and the new Portal but that doesn't mean that they can at least give us some useful news about the project.

Anyone agree.

While the development times weren't shortened by as much as both Valve and we hoped(wasn't the original plan to complete the trilogy by 2008?), it's still better than the 6 years between HL1 and 2.

I want EP3 as much as you do, but Valve has admitted that the whole episodic content idea things went kaputz when they started making the games bigger and better. I'm sure we're all waiting for a very good reason, and the reason is going to be a great, polished game that wraps up the HL2 story arc.

Triple agreed.

Quadruple agreed?

^Haha.

Agreed

Double Agreed

I was being sarcastic...

Valve don't want release trailers/info for a game that might get released a couple of years down the line. They're being smart and keeping tight lipped. When they're comfortable and have a release date in mind, they will release media. They don't want to start the whole 'delayed' situation again. So just keep your panties on for a bit longer.

Suppose your right. We don't want another Black Mesa Source type thing now do we.

EDIT: Keep posting though

Well to be objective HL2 took on an entirely new engine which took quite some time to develop and perfect. These "episodes" are running on an already developed engine with many assets already in place. Not to mention these episodes are only hours in length.

Episodic gaming failed big time. Just look at Sin Episodes.
Sin Episodes is precisely what's right about Episodic game development. If Emergence was a full-sized product, consumers and the developer alike would have paid far more in cash for a full-scale exercise in mediocrity. Episodic allowed the sustained launch and development of Telltale's adventure games at the very least. Don't write it off because Valve take their sweet time.

Half-Life 2 Entered development in 1998 upon the completion of Half-Life.
Half-Life 2 Episodes Entered development in 2004 upon the completition of Half-Life 2.
Half-Life 2 Episode One was released in Mid 2006.
Half-Life 2 Episode Two was released in Late 2007.

Whilst only using the words 'Duh' 'Gargle' 'Splurt' and 'Pfff', please explain which two thirds of Half-Life 2 you were playing in Mid 2000 and Late 2001. An answer created with Finger-Paints will also be acceptable, but please be sure to use a non-toxic paint.

It was a decent ambition for them to try, and I appreciate the attempt, Valve themselves have said it hasn't really worked out like they hoped. But hey, they already have an Episode 3 in development, might as well just let 'em finish it and end proper.

I doubt they're going to try the same for the next Half-Life installment. But it could probably be retained for another of their IPs. Did anybody else expect the L4D2 announcement so soon?

The combination of all the episodes will most likely be lengthier than the original Half Life 2 itself.

The first episode was released in 2005? The second was in 2007, and the third most likely in 2010. 2 years and 3 years intervals are pretty decent.

There was a time when I never knew Half Life 2 episode one was different to Half Life 2. I waited for a long time for Half Life 2 episode 2, and when I saw the back of the orange box which states there was a Half Life 2 and Half Life 2 episode one included, I realized I was 2 years behind.....

Yes, on paper it seems like the episodes would only take months to develop, and Valve seemed to think the same too. Obviously things turned out to be a bit more complicated than that.

First one was in mid-2006 actually, so only a 1.5 year gap between the first two. Although by now more time than that has passed since Episode 2.

I know its just that they released the trailer like two years ago and it hasn't been released yet.

Well what do you expect. It's free.

You don't make demands if it's free, especially when it's a fan made project, a very well made fan made project that is.

they also said they were changing to the Ep: 2's upgraded engine instead of hl2's. So I knew it would take longer. Which is fine.

I just wish VALVe would quit giving us any release dates. We all know that its going to come out 3 years after they say its going to come out, so just tell us it'll be done when its done and don't say lolz 2010 definitly.
