Erm... VALVe owns the Lambda Logo?

WTF Valve?! I was reading an ad that had some combine elites on it, and they were so cool. Something about intel core duo.. and free HL2 stuffs..
Anyway, I was reading the bottom with all the trademarks and I read this line..
(C)2006 Valve Corporation. All rights Reserved. Valve, The Valve logo, Half-Life,the Half-Life logo, The lambda logo,Counter-Strike,?and the source logo are trademarks of... blah blah blah.
But how can a single compony own a letter of the greek alphabet? I understand the HALF-LIFE logo (The one with the lambda and a circle around it.) but how can they OWN the single letter?!?!?!11? Not cool Valve. Not cool.
